"Anya Singleton--Blog Critics"

Anya Singleton offers up a delicious, sultry concoction of well-crafted original material perfect for her style. Her voice is passionate but knowing, more warm than cool, and she puts her excellent technique in the service of the song.
However, to my ear, the most enjoyable thing about this EP, along with Singleton's delivery, is how the original song-writing and jazzy flavor of the arrangements gives the songs an earthy, acoustic edge. It's the originality on display that makes this album special. - Blog Critics

"ANYA SINGLETON: A SONGBIRD READY TO TAKE FLIGHT"

We’re all summoned to silence at the sound of something extraordinary. That’s why people’s mouths drop when Anya Singleton lifts her voice. The girl has the proverbial “gift” and man, does she know how to share it.

The petite, red-haired dynamo has been compared to icons ranging from Norah Jones to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Joni Mitchell, and Bonnie Raitt. While her voice and showmanship are deserving of those comparisons, Singleton’s sincerity is all her own. Despite her soothingly smoky sound, what’s really at the heart of New York’s emerging love affair with this on-the-brink-of-notoriety performer is that she’s so attractively unpretentious. Her songs are heartfelt stories, and Singleton tells them flawlessly. Her latest release, Not Easy To Forget, is selling well on iTunes, CDBaby, and amazon.com, where her music ranks among one of the site’s most popular jazz downloads.

Raised in South Africa and England by American parents - a Massachusetts born Peace Corps Dad and ultra-supportive Mom, also from Massachusetts – Anya was exposed, growing up internationally, to diverse music and stage styles. It no doubt cultivated the refreshingly vibrant presence she brings to her own performances. Anya and her family returned to the States when she was a junior in high school and she went on to earn a scholarship to Boston’s prestigious Emerson College. After graduating summa cum laude with a B.F.A. in acting, the artist hit the New York music scene, where she’s now garnering some significant notice. Singleton appears frequently at The Cutting Room and The Bitter End, and has also wowed audiences at Crash Mansion, CBGB’s Gallery, The Triad, and CODA 34. She recently performed to a crowd of hundreds at CJ Sparks in New Hampshire, indicative of the fact that this local performer likely won’t be local for long.

Her live shows are most probably the reason. Although Anya’s CDs absolutely engage and impress, it’s onstage where this songstress really lets loose and brings listeners to a ‘gives you the goosebumps’ kind of place. “I think I play better live than I do in the studio,” she says. “It’s hard for me to capture the energy I feel when I perform live when I record in a studio. It’s a challenge. But I’d much rather be that way than be someone that’s great in the studio but gets in front of an audience and can’t make that connection.”

Connection is key to Singleton. She refers to the phrase ‘When you can’t say something, you sing it, and when you can’t sing it, you dance it.’ “Sometimes speaking to something just isn’t enough,” she points out. “When I sing, I feel I can express what I have to say so much better through music than just by telling a story. Sure, I like hearing people say that they like my music. But I absolutely love it when they say that they can tell I understand the story, and what they are feeling. For me, it’s not about the applause. It’s about getting through to people. I never want to lose the connection with the live audience because when that happens, you don’t believe what you’re singing about. That, to me, is the worst thing that could happen. When people are emotionally moved by the songs, it’s the greatest feeling in the world.”

It’s that genuine sincerity that sets Singleton apart. Although compared to many famous vocalists, Anya finds it hard to pinpoint one who has influenced her the most. “It’s a tough question, because I draw my influences from a lot of them. They’re all great artists, and iconic in their own way because they overcame a lot of odds to make it and I really appreciate that about them. But I don’t want to try to sound like someone else; I would feel false.”

Singleton is quick to praise her band for helping her achieve her distinct sound. “They’re all such talented and consummate musicians,” she credits. Instruments they accompany her with include electric and sometimes acoustic guitar, upright and acoustic electric bass, drums, organ, and piano. Together, they continue to create music that is sure to inspire loyal and new fans, alike.

New or old, voices like Anya Singleton’s stand the test of time. “I want so much to keep doing what I love and making music that people can feel emotionally attached to.”

It bears repeating - The girl has the proverbial “gift” and man does she know how to share it.--

"Anya Singleton--Caught In The Carousel"

A sizzling combination of blistering blues and rueful R&B, The Other Side introduces Singleton as one of the purest singers around. Falling somewhere between Dusty Springfield and Joss Stone, Singleton really knows how to get inside a song…the results are staggering.

"Anya Singleton--All Music Guide"

Singleton is an expressive singer with a bluesy, soulful approach…she is talented enough as a singer and songwriter, and she is growing as an artist so fast, that comparisons to others are likely to be inadequate soon. Fans of adult pop/rock take note.

If lots of heart were the ticket to pop superstardom, Anya Singleton would be queen. - Justine Magazine

"Anya Singleton--Pittsburgh Daily News"

"...Showing off a set of super neo-soul pipes...Singleton scores with her full-length debut "The Other Side,"...an entertaining record from beginning to end...that should burst her into the national consciousness."
- Jeffrey Sisk - Pittsburgh Daily News

"Anya Singleton--The Guest List"

"With "The Other Side" Anya has proven she can make a full album that will keep you entranced from the opening notes to the closing notes..I was instantly blown away by what I heard." - The Guest List

"Anya Singleton--Filter Magazine"

Singer-songwriter Anya Singleton's cosmopolitan features must be a product of her globetrotting ways. Born in Tunisia, this firecracker was raised in South Africa and the UK before setting her sites on the Big Apple to write and record her debut full-length, The Other Side. Chock full of guitar-driven breakup songs, Anya's organic approach lets her impressive vocals shine through. And what a set of pipes she has.

Deep, throaty, and blues-tinged, she calls to mind KT Tunstall or Nikki Costa on her fiery debut single, "Don't Tell Me." The video introduces us to Anya by way of this female-empowerment anthem and an acoustic guitar. Grabbing a pair of hot pink heels and letting her red tresses hang free, she makes her way to the club with an edgy sense of confidence, as bystanders cop unrestrained glances. - Filter Magazine

"Anya Singleton--Broward New Times"

"Anya Singleton may be a relative newcomer, but she borrows from the best; some Norah Jones here, a hint of Susan Tedeschi and Tracy Chapman there, with a bit of Sade and Portishead tossed in for good measure. Lest she appear to be doing no more than retreading others' turfs, a listen to her sensuous debut assuages any doubts about her abilities. Singleton's skills lie in her compelling songcraft, and while doe-eyed crooners like Jones and James Blunt have made emotive exposition all the rage, Singleton finds a lilt rather than lethargy, choosing melody over melodrama."

"Anya Singleton--Pitch Perfect"

"As a vocalist, Anya Singleton exhibits characteristics of classic female blues artists and modern pop divas; as a lyricist she's a pro with meter and metaphor; as a songwriter she's got a spunky contemporary flair. Putting all these together forms a catchy, thoughtful picture that will attract some attention from traditional blues hounds and even more from those who enjoy pop with heart and brains...Singleton is ready for pop fame."
