BARRIE - While winter may not be the ideal time to tour Northern Ontario, musician Kit Cairns can’t wait to hit the snow-covered roads.

“I went to university in Thunder Bay, and I actually miss their winters,” he said. “I always said if I was to go back, it would be in the winter.”

Cairns and fellow musician Marcus White are the stars of the Kit and Marcus Show tour. The duo will hit 11-cities and 13-venues in only 13 days.

“It’s going to be busy that’s for sure,” Cairns said.

Cairns and White will each play solo material, then perform together during the show.

The two met through White’s mom, a co-worker of Cairns. This will be their first tour together.

“We had this instant musical connection,” Cairns said. “We started recording together in 2003. We put out one album, then decided to do solo stuff. But we both record in my home studio, so we are always together.”

By day, Cairns is a local high school science teacher. He decided to use the last few weeks of his paternity leave to hit the road. Cairns describes his sound as edgy-folk rock.

“I have something to say with my music. There are meaningful messages in all my songs,” he said. “I get up and sing for the same reason’s I get up and teach.”

Cairns is set to release a new album by Christmas. White should have a new CD available by the time the tour starts.

The Kit and Marcus Show tour starts Feb. 16 at the Broken Road in Orillia, then hits Barrie on Feb. 17 at The Local Gastro Pub.

Any new, unsigned, or indie label artists producing original music and touring always get my respect.

There is not a lot of money to be made, but it is good promotion for your music.

Kit Cairns is a Barrie-based musician and high school science teacher, who is undertaking a 13-date Northern Ontario tour, with fellow songwriter Marcus White.

It's not something you see a lot from independent bands or artists, especially during a Northern Ontario winter.

Cairns and White will be at The Windsor Tavern this Sunday at 8.p m. for a three-hour show.

Cairns' songs are folk based, and quite catchy.

He also runs his own independent recording facility.

His latest CD, "My World" was released in 2008.

When Chris squared -- Nettleton and Potter -- asked me to help judge for the Legend Series competition at the Red Dog, I sensed right away that the experience was going to be fun. What I didn't quite grasp at the time was just how difficult it would be, when all was sung and done, to help choose a winner each night of the Idol-type event.
That was the case Oct. 31 when local rock bands did their thing and that was certainly the case this past Tuesday eve when solo and duo acts performed. From the first note to the last, my pal Mel -- that would be Mel Hannah of BOB FM -- and I had our senses tickled silly, in the end fretting, again, over just who would move on to the Legends finals Nov. 21. So difficult was Tuesday's decision that we couldn't choose, no matter how we tried, between Wayne Adam and The Unknown On Her Own -- Jocelyn Thompson -- joined by Bakes. After consulting with Nettleton and getting the green light to do so, we placed both first in a tie.
If you're curious to learn more regarding our dilemma, drop by the Montreal House this Saturday night where The Unknown On Her Own -- Thompson’s voice that literally soars -- and Bakes will share the stage with the Tom Eastland Band and Wes Ryan, the latter of whom also competed, and competed well, Tuesday. That all gets under way at 10:30 p.m.
Rounding out Tuesday's line-up was Barrie's Kit Cairns, riding the crest of his new CD release This Is Me, and Marc Ekins of Lindsay, whose country-laced lyrics and sound didn't quite fit the series' rock format but were terrific nonetheless. Look for him when the Legend Series tackles country music next month.
Again, a great night -- Nettleton and his band Givenstone got things started right -- and the best part is we get to do it all again next Tuesday when the remainder of the solo and duo acts -- Kendall Sullivan, Drea, Brennon Wasson, Joel Parks, Greg Dowey and Roy Asseltine, Sunshine Ross, and Eastland featuring Bakes -- try to nab a spot in the finals. Check it out.
A little closer on the entertainment calendar is this weekend's staging of one of the few musicals I ever enjoyed start to finish. If you guessed I'm not a big musical guy, you guessed right, but Fiddler On The Roof has it all -- classic songs, a great story line and the dominant father figure we've all come to know and love. The St. James' Players are staging the musical tonight (Friday) and Saturday at Showplace, 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday. Tickets cost $22 at the box office, $20 seniors/students, or call 742-7469.
Also on the stage this weekend, the Peterborough Theatre Guild's Enter A Free Man wraps up with performances tonight and Saturday at The Guild Hall. Call the box office for tickets, 745-4211.
And 4th Line Theatre, with Peterborough This Week as one of the sponsors, presents a reading of new-play-in-development The Right Road To Pontypool on Sunday, 2 p.m., at Centennial Museum, overlooking the best damn tobogganing hill in the land.
Musically, the music that is part of the mosaic that is Newfoundland, Ireland and Scotland is featured Saturday night at the Rusty Snail on Hunter Street West with Michael Ketemer and Glen Caradus doing the honours.
And at the Evinrude today through Sunday, a psychic fair features demonstrations and lectures for those who just need to know. A psychic fair. Who could have seen that coming?
Get out and enjoy this weekend but come Saturday at 11 a.m., take pause to remember those who gave so much so we could have an equal amount.

Fans of folk and rock can listen to both musical genres by catching Barrie’s Kit Cairns and Marcus White at Peddler’s Pub downtown on Cedar Street, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m.

The duo are on tour in northern Ontario from Feb. 16 to 28. They just finished a gig in Bracebridge.

“We have 14 shows confirmed in 13 days in 11 different cities throughout central and northern Ontario,” Cairns said, in a phone interview.

The acoustic guitar musician is currently on a paternity leave from his regular job teaching environmental science in Barrie.

He is the father of two boys, Walden, three, and Canyon, one.

Despite growing up on a farm in southwestern Ontario, Cairns, 31, is no stranger to the north.

“I went to Lakehead University in 1997 and then returned there to do my teaching degree at their teachers college,” he said.

“I appreciate the beauty of the north.”

He has been influenced by the music of Neil Young and Alanis Morissette.

“I also have a keen environmental sense going back to my high school days,” he said.

“Songs about making the world better for our families are predominate in my material.”

He currently lives on a 135-year-old homestead near Barrie, where he grows his own food for his family.

“We are self-sufficient in vegetables,” he said. “We even make and preserve our own baby food.”

He has produced two CDs independently: This Is Me, in 2006 and My World, in 2008.

“Personally, I have made several top 30 charts on campus and community radio stations across Canada and have been showcased on Barrie’s Rock 95 New Music Hour.”

White, Cairn’s accompanying musician, has more of a rock sound, Cairns said.

“Both of us have produced our own independent records and we have been collaborating with each other for years.

Together we produced the No Boundaries CD in 2004. We do all our own instrumentals on our recordings.”

Both have recently performed together at Hard Rock Café, and a number of other locations in Toronto, as well as participating in music festivals across southern Ontario.

The show at Peddler’s Pub will be three hours long and feature solo sets from each musician interspersed.

“We do about three 45-minute sets each and then come together at the end of the evening. Almost all the songs are originals though we may do a couple of covers near the end.”

Admission for the concert is $4 at the door.

Joining him on the road is former No Boundaries band-mate Marcus White -- the two musicians plan to do one acoustic rock set each and join together for a couple of songs.

They also expect to have two guest artists at each of the two local kick-offs.

"I've always wanted to do a tour and it hit me in October. I have to do it now," said Cairns, who as an independent artist handled all the booking details himself.

The Barrie high school science teacher is nearing the end of a paternity leave with his second child. The timing also worked out for extended family members to help out with the children while their dad takes his original music on the road.

He's been working at it for the past 10 years, cut two CDs which he recorded himself, and polished his chops playing live shows.

He's performed at The Opera House, Rivoli, Sound Academy and El Mocambo in Toronto, as well as festivals such as The Legend Series and Barrie New Music Fest.

His music has proved popular on the college and university circuit with four songs landing in the top 30 at Campus Radio.

Cairns has also received airplay at Rock 95's new music hour and is currently being played in northwestern Ontario on CBC radio in advance of the tour.

"That's exciting -- I've never had anything happen on mainstream CBC," said Cairns, who likes to write songs about the environment, social issues and social justice. "Not all, but the majority (of songs) -- it kind of goes in sync with what I teach."


While he has been teaching for the past six years, Cairns started out working with troubled youth and after three years, went back to Lakehead University in Thunder Bay for teacher's college.

One of the gigs on the tour will be at the campus.

Cairns grew up in a musical family on a 10-acre, self-sufficient farm near Stratford. His father was a member of the band Perth County Conspiracy.

For Cairns, songwriting began with poetry back when he was in high school. He picked up the guitar in university and hasn't looked back since.

He describes his music as "edgy poetic folk rock." Many of the songs he writes stem, in large part, from his poetry.

He also touches on family values in his writing. Cairns and Laura have been together for the past five years and live out in the Horseshoe Valley area.

They grow all their own vegetables and are hoping to add a few animals to their mini-farm in the near future.

Marcus White will also be featuring original rock music off his solo release and new album.

Originally from Mattawa, White is based out of Ajax, where the tour has its last gig.

The 'Kit and Marcus Show' plays The Broken Road, 35 West St. S., Orillia on Tuesday and moves to The Local Gastro Pub, 37 Dunlop St. W. in Barrie next Wednesday.

There is no cover charge at either location.

This is very exciting for me as I have had to take a little break with regard to my music recently and to see that it is still getting airplay and making the Top 30 Charts is very meaningful and exciting. The Kit and Marcus Show wound up their Northern Ontario tour in Ajax at the St. Louis Bar & Grill. The jam packed schedule included 13 days of travelling, 13 great venues, 10 cities and a whole lot of original acoustic folk/rock music. The two seasoned singer song-writers embarked on a journey to Thunder Bay and back stopping along the way to share their music and promote their passion. "It was a good tour", said Marcus. "We received a lot of exposure and it was my first time going to Thunder Bay and Timmins".

He describes his music as “edgy alternative or edgy folk rock.” And you’ll definitely find that the music is lyrically in line with his values. He frequently writes and sings songs about his perception of the meaning of life, and provides profound messages about why he believes we’re here. His music speaks about rising above the constructed world we’ve built for ourselves, and getting back to our roots in a more soulful and meaningful way. When asked about his passion for music and performances, he stated that whatever inspires him to get up in front of his students is the same thing that inspires him to get up on stage. He believes he has something important to say, and feels an intense need for people to listen to him and hear his message. Surprisingly, Kit used to have stage fright when he first started performing. But once he realized that being a musician is a profession just like teaching, he put those fears to rest.

With the current social and environmental issues facing the world along with the start of his new "Family" and ownership of his own "Home" Kit Cairns has had much inspiration to build his 2008 full-length independent CD release titled "My World." This record takes you "Deep Inside" the "Just For Me" thoughts and experiences of Kit Cairns as he reveals his true understanding of love in "My Girl" and his outlook on the world in "Full Of Greed." Still determined to "Change The World" Kit has decided to "Slow Down" and focus his music on what really matters.
His first single "Full Of Greed" touches on the darker side of life by expressing the truth about the unfortunate misuse and abuse of power and resources by highly developed nations. His second single "My Girl" takes a more positive approach to life by focusing on the rewards of true love.
Kit Cairns now 29 yrs old, displays a broad range of lyrical messages and musical melodies. Inspired by the likes of Henry David Thoreau, Alanis Morissette, Pearl Jam and Kirk Cobain along with family ties to Perth County Conspiracy, Kit has developed a unique sound that is unmatched by others. Two independent musicians, 13 days of travelling, 14 great venues, 11 cities and a whole lot of original acoustic folk/rock music - “The Kit and Marcus Show” is official and kicks off in Orillia, Ontario at The Broken Road on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 at 8:00PM. From there the two seasoned singer songwriters embark on a journey to Thunder Bay and back stopping along the way to share their music and promote their passion. The thirteen day, eleven city tour wraps up at St Louis Bar and Grill in Ajax, Ontario on Sunday, February 28th, 2010.

Although Kit Cairns has more of an edgy folk sound and Marcus White produces more of a rock output, they certainly are no strangers to each other. From being in a band together, to recording songs together, to a special musical energy that flows between them, their journey together is actually one of great length. Solo album releases, radio airplay, a busy Toronto gig schedule, studio sessions, parenthood, life lessons, and an exciting vibe provide these two musicians with a history to write about and talent to get it heard. Come on out to one of their shows to hear Kit Cairns sing truth about the environment, society and his family while Marcus White provides some love with his soulful ballads reflecting life’s hardships and handshakes.

The “Kit and Marcus Show” will consist of each artist performing a distinctly unique and entertaining one hour intimate set. Kit will be performing songs from his two solo releases “This Is Me” and “My World” as well as showcasing some exciting new material destined for his 2010 album release. Marcus will be performing songs from his “From the Soul” solo release as well as promoting his much anticipated new album “Another Suburban Morning.” The last half hour of the show includes an acoustic duo where both artists come together to play a few covers and some historic songs off of their 2004 combined release titled “No Holds Barred.” Merchandise will be available for purchase as well as one free cd given away at each venue.
