Dummy is an unlikely name for a mastermind, but DJ Dummy is a genius when it comes to the turntables. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, this Battle/Party/Concert DJ, who also adds Musical Director and Producer to his title, has had his hands on turntables since the tender age of seven.
In 1991, people took notice when the then 14-year old djing prodigy, held his own on the stage of the Supermen DJ Battle, one of the premier DJ events in the battle circuit. Dummy’s early '90s performance began to establish his name within the music industry and jump-started his career. During his DJ battling run, Dummy won the New York Regional DMC Battle ('98), the American DMC Battle (3rd – '98), and the Zulu Nation Battle (2nd - '96).
DJ Dummy’s success in the battle circuit made an impression within the hip-hop community and solidified the fact that he was a talent to be reckoned with. He not only had the innate understanding of the actual skill of djing, but also the uncanny ability to excite a crowd of any size. This ability and his flawless capacity to recreate the DJ live on stage, has attracted many of hip-hop’s top artists. Through the years, Dummy has worked closely on creating stage shows and/or djed for Common, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Kanye West, Music Soulchild, Mos Def, A+, DMX, Onyx, Das Efx, All City, Trigga the Gambler, Smooth tha Hustler, and Group Home.
Its no surprise that DJ Dummy’s rare talent to excite any type of crowd makes djing parties his favorite thing to do. Dummy analyzes and studies the crowd to understand their vibe; he has successfully made “turning the party out” a science. Throughout his solid career, Dummy has electrified numerous clubs and has toured internationally, entertaining clients such as LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neil, Venus Williams, P-Diddy, the NBA, NFL Pro Bowl, Super Bowl, Red Bull, GM, MAGIC, Nike, Hennessey, L-R-G, Diesel and Ryan Kenny to name a few.
DJ Dummy has been djing professionally for nearly 2 decades and has seen the development of djing move from an art form to an occupation, but DJs have been under-appreciated and under-managed. It was from that knowledge, as well as the belief that the DJ is the heart of hip-hop, that he started 12 Inch Assassins in 1996. 12 Inch Assassins was created to provide the music industry with the most talented group of DJs for events, nightclubs, concert tours, and studio production.
Like his unique talent on the turntables, Dummy has a brought his distinctive sound to his music production. The talented producer runs his own music production company and studio, Them Cats Productions and Soul Source Music, respectively. Them Cats has produced music for Common, Dru Hill, Raheem DeVaughn, Charisse Rose of Changing Faces, and Kim Hill, formerly of Black Eyed Peas.
Currently Dummy can be found on Ustream’s viral radio, hosting his daily morning show, The Breakfast Club; he currently djs for Common and J.Cole.
