Bio

Cerulean City (say it slowly...SIR-OOL-IAN  SIT-EE) became a band in Brooklyn, NY, in 2003 with founding members Christian Smith, John Servo, and Lars Burggren. The current Line-up includes Beantown funkster Kevin O'Brien on bass. They now call Ithaca, NY their home.  Ithaca is gorges, in case you didn't know. The trio, consisting of only guitar, bass and drums, have garnered recognition for their wide open live shows and an outstanding debut recording dubbed "Trio Grande."  The sound has been described as "Electro Slam Jazz," whatever that means.  the band has shared bills with national acts such as Sam Kininger Band, Jennifer Hartswick Band, Perpetual Groove, Freekbass, Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root, RAQ, The Bridge, Hot Buttered Rum String Band, and many more. Each of the many audiences of the band's burgeoning fan core have been astounded by Cerulean City's foray into an altogether original sound, well-received and fearless.

STAFF

Drums - Lars Burggren comes to us from Iowa. Try not to think of corn or Kevin Costner. You can't do it, can you? Anyways, Lars brings a stylistic component that is the very foundation of Cerulean City. His deep grooves and modulating rhythms drive the jams to another level. Lars learned this from NYC heavyweights like Kim Plainfield and Memo Acevedo. He has toured throughout the country with Drum Corp, which is actually cool, and is a veteran of many a mid-western funk and soul band. Vic Firth sticks use Lars.

Bass -Kevin O'Brien hails from the greasy trenches of Boston, where he laid it down for the eight piece funk/R&B band Sugarcoat, as well as freaked-it-on-out for the instrumental exploits of Under Wraps. He's had the pleasure of studying with a wide variety of masters, including Alexis Sklarevski, Oneida James, John Humphrey, and David Hughes. Kevin likes fire, and is afraid of mountain lions and bicycles.

Guitar - Christian Smith studied with some of the greatest musicians on the planet. From Wayne Krantz and Scott Henderson, to Ben Sher and Jack Wilkins, he has gathered knowledge and experience from the top. On stage, Chris uses a keen sense of dynamics and texture to top off the CC sound. It is generally considered that Chris' effects pedal board is the "4th Member" of the band. It usually gets more attention after shows than the other 3. Originally from upstate NY, Chris has lived all over the country, recently settling back in Ithaca, NY.

FACTOID

"Cerulean" is a shade of blue and a type of Warbler.
