"1st Review"

So, I put up a craigslist ad announcing the launch of this blog. The first band to respond to the ad was called "Bodyface." Right off the bat I was put off. From the image of the band to the first few notes. It's not the look or sound that I really jive to. But, I figured these guys are clearly on their game and know that if they want their music to get "out" they need to reach out to whatever media outlets they can, and, so, I did the nice and responsible thing and listened to the three songs on their myspace attentively.

And I'm glad I did.

They are very, very good. "Water" got me thinking of Nirvana, which is borderline sacrilege, because, well, it's Nirvana. But, nonetheless that's what popped into my head. "MRI" reminded me a bit of later Pearl Jam, so, now having put them in the company of some bonified rock gods it was time to listen to the last song with ears attuned to something that six minutes prior they were not attuned to. "Despair" is a beautiful ballad with just the right mixture of anger and sentiment. Very neatly arranged and, in terms of creating a somber but not gushy aesthetic, the song achieves so excellently.

They're playing at the Annex on 10/29 and I might just have to go to the show.

"Bodyface in Union Square"

In NYC it’s quite common to come across unexpected musical performances—there’s the saxaphone player who enters your subway car to serenade you and your fellow commuters, the upstairs neighbor who decides to play his guitar all evening, and the pianist who somehow managed to get his upright piano down onto the subway platform to perform for you while you wait for the D train (a feat worthy of a donation, no matter what the music sounds like).

But today I stumbled upon a concert which seemed to be pretty professional in a DIY sort of way. See, I got off the subway at Union Square and I had some time to kill before meeting a friend. So I was going to head towards Barnes and Noble, but I saw a bunch of fire trucks and a ton of smoke coming from 18th street, so I figured it was best to head in the opposite direction. As I walked towards 14th I thought “ooh, what is this that I hear? music? amplified?” And then it all came into view: a band of four guys with all their amps and multiple videographers. Yes, only in New York can a person have the experience of thinking “damn, that building’s on fire, can’t walk over there. ok, let me go the other way, oh nice, a concert.”

With the sound of sirens somehow masked in the background, the band turned out to be pretty good and held my attention for multiple songs. I wasn’t quite sure what was going on at first. Was this a sponsored gig? Would I have to try a sample of gatorade before I left? I even wondered if the band was shooting a music video since there were at least three videographers of the non-amateur variety. The stickers on the band’s drum set said “What is Bodyface?” So unless they were advertising a new Neutrogena product, I figured that was the name of the band, and I decided I would look them up when I got home.

After a few songs they passed a bucket around for donations. I was feeling generous after a botched I-think-this-may-or-may-not-be-a-scam incident on my lunch break the other day. And I was pretty sure the money would go to a good cause. One of the guys started holding up CDs and I think he was offering them for a dollar. I decided to toss in all the cash I had, a grand total of four dollars. I know, pathetic, but I think that’s reasonable for a 4-song CD (with a bonus bumper sticker). As I was taking the CD I heard the videographer mentioning something to another guy about holding up the CD and saying “Bodyface!” to the camera. Yeah, that was my cue to exit stage left. Dudes, you’ll get a blog post, but you will not find me offering up any on-camera testimonials at this point. Let me at least listen to the CD first.

And that was that. I walked away with a CD from a band I never heard of and a concert I didn’t mean to attend. Nice.

"Powerpopaholic Review"

The combination of Jared Kerr, Joe Brennan and Dan Marsh bring you a heavy rock band that tries hard to channel Superdrag, but sounds closer to Extreme in spots. Either way "Get Away" is the album highlight, with a combination of heavy riffs and solid vocals. The intense "Kill Her" and "I Love You Vampire" also have it's moments, and the power ballad "Future No Hope" with it's soft/hard vocal contrasts will impress you for sure. - Powerpopaholic.com

WHAT IS BODYFACE?
Bodyface is a power trio from New York City.
Compared to such acts as Radiohead, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Failure, Bodyface embraces the quintessential elements of 90’s abrasive alternative grunge while imposing innovative aggressive experimentalism. Bodyface is grounded in post industrial grunge rock and merged with the sonic rush of crushing volume and melodic moodiness. The self-assured songwriting and Jared Kerr’s angst ridden lyrics convey compelling images of alienation and introspection. Beautiful melodies never sounded so scared.
Lead singer and guitarist, Jared Kerr, began his music career in 1996 at the age of 13, when he and Matthew Pop formed Jet Orange. Jared’s unorthidox approach to the guitar; inspired by classical guitar; sans class; provides Bodyface with its multilayered sound. Jared has been in such bands as Jet Orange, Spitter, Monster Christ, Fin until 2008 when he and Roger El Asmar formed Bodyface.
Roger Asmar, left his home country of Venezuela hell bent on drumming for an American rock band. He paid his dues in the NYC rock scene playing with such acts as Derailed, Defect, & the New Professionals. Roger’s persistence and dedication paid off when he met Jared in early 2008. The pair immediately recognized the potential of the fiery melodic music that they were producing and in the summer of 2009, Bodyface booked a European tour spanning 6 countries.
Upon their return to the States, Bodyface went directly to the studio to record their first full length album. With the assistance of recording legend, Tommy Uzzo, Bodyface crafted an album that is memorable and unique in a way that has not been heard for some time.
September of 2010 saw many huge developments for the group. The bands multimedia website, whatisbodyface.com was launched and they celebrated the release of their debut album with a special performance at NYC’s Webster Hall.
Currently, Bodyface is in the process of booking an East Coast tour in support of their debut album, Bias.
