Brazilian-New Yorker baile funk vocalist Zuzuka Poderosa hits you with beats and a vocal style that is as fresh to these parts as fresh bread from your local bakery. She delivers rhymes in her native Portuguese over bumping beats. It doesn’t even matter whether or not you understand Portuguese; if you like badassness and dance-inducing rhythms, you will understand Zuzuka.
Zuzuka has been featured in magazines as far out as Time Out Singapore, Brazil’s Jornal Extra and blogs of the local grown variety like Remezcla. I had the opportunity to meet and chat with her in depth about her life and her musical journey... - BOOMBOOMCHICK.COM

Bassanovva is a new project from Jubilee and Grahmzilla (the man behind the beats of the now-defunct Thunderheist). Both members sport a lot of bass on their musical resumes, so expect a lot of low-end wildness when their debut EP drops on November 1, courtesy of Sinden's new Grizzly imprint. The duo is performing this weekend in Ottawa and Toronto—click here for details—and in a few weeks they'll be making their live debut in the US at the Flashing Lights' 2-Year Anniversary in NY alongside Nacho Lovers and Jubilee's Flashing Lights compatriots DJ Ayres and Nick Catchdubs. In the meantime, Bassanovva has elected to whet our appetites with this "Alien Disco Mix" of Brooklyn baile funk queen Zuzuka Poderosa. Thick bass, drums that knock, and vocals chopped and twisted into oblivion make the whole thing a bit bonkers, but we'd expect nothing less from this pair. - XRL8R

Bio
"Baile funk turned inside out!" - Spin Magazine
“Not only is she bringing her own brand of the hot Brazilian underground sound to the rest of the world, but from her international vantage point she operates like a provocatively rhyming hurricane, sucking up global riddims from ghettotech to dancehall and flinging them back out at gale-force speeds.”- MTV
ZUZUKA PODEROSA is the queen warrior of her own special brand of Baile Funk: CARIOCA BASS
Funk Carioca (another name for Baile Funk, which means “The Funk Ball”) originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, borrowing heavily from the Miami Booty Bass movement of the 80s; it’s just the starting place of the ZUZUKA POWER-sound.
ZUZUKA collaborates and releases singles with producers from all over the world who mix the past with the future in Sur America-cosmic new ways. She raps and sings in Portuguese, Spanish and English (and she likes to say “Body Language”), musing provocatively and sarcastically over boomy electric kick drums and Latin percussion.
ZUZUKA makes Carioca Bass music. 'Interracial Music Babies' all her own. Her sound is fierce and fun. With a wildly engaging show, she conjures images of hot summer dance parties on gritty Brooklyn rooftops or up in the hills overlooking the sea.
She’s been profiled in PRI's The World, MTV Iggy, and NPR Alt.Latino.
ZUZUKA’s project with Sonora - of Texas Global Bass collective, Peligrosa - 'Sonora Remixes: Zuzuka Poderosa' - was critically acclaimed around the Global Bass communities in 2010.
Her collaboration with Dublin-based producer, Orquesta - the ‘Dona Sandra EP’ - a collection of remixes, was named by NPR as one of the ‘Best Beats of Summer 2011’.
In late 2011, ZUZUKA was invited to give a lecture at NYU about Carioca Bass for a class on Contemporary Brazilian Music, the only of its type on the East Coast, led by Professor Jason Stanyek. She was also featured in Béco Dranoff’s documentary, 'BEYOND IPANEMA: Brazilian Waves In Global Music', about the global influence of Brazilian music, and this year, BEYOND IPANEMA started it's own TV show on Canal Brasil with over 150 episodes where ZUZUKA will be fully profiled about her music Journey.
The ‘Carioca Bass Mixtape’ by Kush Arora was dropped consequently on Okayplayer, Okay Africa and Large Up in Spring 2012. MTV Iggy described the mix:
“It’s hard to match the heat of her live show, but this mix comes close, in particular because of all the far flung beats (and buddies) it brings together. Folks from South Africa’s Spoek Mathambo to true baile funk heavies like DJ Edgar are on here, helping to realize that “interracial music babies” vision of hers with a little funk, a little dancehall, even a little bhangra. It’s a party. So, get down.”
“Ambassador of Bhangra” - DJ Rekha - debuted her most recent single, ‘Pyar Baile’ featuring Dave Sharma and Meetu Chilana, on her Beat Bazaar label in 2012.

It features ZUZUKA’s funk-inspired lyrics over a Bhangra beat; the interracial music baby continues to grow, traveling to new destinations and possibilities.
Psicodelia (Nego Mozambique remix) was released by Little Owl Recordings in December 2012 and made to RCDLBL's Best Party Dancy Music of 2012. ZUZUKA released her EP, ‘Carioca Bass’ with Bay Area producer, Kush Arora which features a storm of remix work from around the globe.
ZUZUKA has shared the stage and collaborated with: Bomba Estereo, Ana Tijoux, Araab Muzik, Spoek Mathambo, Nadastrom, Los Rakas, Maluca, Jillionaire, Schlachthofbronx, Sleigh Bells, Girl Talk, Spinn & Rashad, The Very Best, Marcelo D2 (song and video "Meu Tambor") and Baile Funk pioneers: DJ Edgar & Sany Pitbull
