Troy Young is not a very familiar face (or voice) on the Cape Breton music scene as a whole. He has been around for a few years, mainly limiting himself to local gatherings and performances. You could say that he was ‘paying his dues,’ working his way through the music world’s apprenticeship program, getting the experience he needed to move forward.
Part of the learning curve is honing his skills as a songwriter. Troy has successfully accomplished this task and has proven it on his recently released first CD, “Perfect Dream,” an 11-cut recording that contains nothing but his own material.
With a nice singing voice and backup that includes some of the best around (Fred Lavery, Dave McKeough, Allie Bennett, Stephen Muise, Aaron Lewis and Brian Talbot), the overall sound is quite nice. The musical slant is more country-folk and country-rock, with some straight folk influences in there as well.
Produced and recorded by Fred Lavery and Sheppy at the Lakewind Studios, the CD features some interesting arrangements that highlight some great instrumentation and show off the material well.
Troy sounds good an all cuts but I can imagine other voices singing these songs as well. His skills as a writer should be spread around and hopefully others will hear his work and record it.
Look for Troy Young’s CD. “Perfect Dream” is a well and carefully crafted project that many people will enjoy. - The Cape Breton Post - Dan MacDonald

Bio
Troy Young’s debut CD, Perfect Dream, is a riveting combination of light rock and new age country. A poignant collection of true to the heart songs, Perfect Dream contrasts the soul haunting sound of Safe Here With Me and World Away, with the fresh and flavourful sound of Drives Me Wild and Anything for You. Born and raised in the small town of Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Troy’s music is strongly influenced by other east coast artists like Gordie Sampson, Jimmy Rankin and Bruce Gouthro. Produced under the direction of Fred Lavery at award winning Lakewind Sound Studios, Perfect Dream includes eleven original tracks and a stellar cast of musicians.
A relative newcomer to the music scene, Troy’s arrival seems to have come from nowhere. Rest assured though, his background is music laden. While Troy’s father and brother played in local bands, Troy was more of a hidden talent who only recently chose to showcase his remarkable abilities. Writing musical arrangements has been a hobby of sorts to Troy for most of his life, but it has just been in the past few years that the words have started to fall into place. And how easily they fell. Reaching into his past experiences and reflecting on the reality of the world around him, Troy has created musical poetry that has already touched the depths of his listener’s souls. Perfect Dream is sure to captivate you and leave you yearning for more.
