The Sheds - demo
The mid to late 90s was a good time for ska-punk bands, but a bad
time for the ska-punk sound. As earlier bands combined ska with
punk to get their sound, later bands of the genre took ska-punk as a
whole and tried to emulate that sound with some pretty bad results
which have pretty much tainted the scene forever. But, prior to ska-
punk becoming a parody of itself, in the late 80s and early 90s there
was quite a bit of respect for any band that knew what they were doing
when they set out to combine the two.
I recently went to a Bad Manners show and I was looking forward to
one of the opening bands BRITE SPOT COLLECTIVE, I was a bit
disappointed to hear that the band before them was a ska-punk band
and decided to sit in the parking lot and drink. Fortunately
circumstances changed and the group of people I was with was the
first in the building. I am very glad now that I got to see The Sheds.
They brought back memories of the late 80s though there's no way
they could remember that era - the oldest member of the band is 16.
And, though their sound isn't completely original, they do have a
noticeable classic rock influence that is rarely associated with ska-
punk and their performance is as professional as bands that have been
playing for decades. Watch their videos on Myspace to see what I
mean (start with the video "Skankadelic" - that's my favorite).
One more thing I have to mention is the vocals. Thankfully these guys
never got the memo stating that all ska-punk bands nowadays must
have snotty bratty vocals. These vocals are reminiscent of an indie
rock band that somehow works really well with the music.
This is their demo:
1 Fueled by your Sunshine
2 You Not Me
3 Surgery
4 Critical Moment
5 Only Way Out

Agoura family organizes concerts to help friend
By Sophia Fischer sfischer@theacorn.com
Although cancer is keeping Agoura Hills buddies Morgan Miller and Alex Berson apart, Morgan isn't letting the disease prevent him from supporting Alex, his absent Lindero Canyon Middle School friend. The seventh-grader has to stay at home these days because of nonHodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system.
To help the 12-year-old Alex, Morgan and his family organized a couple of concerts, including one being held at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Fri., Oct. 19, at the Verity Room in Canoga Park.
The lineup features The Sheds, the band Morgan and his brothers Mac, 16, and Evan, 14, and their friend Duncan Murray, 13, front. They'll be appearing with three other local bands: AOK, Morningview and The Good Cheer. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.
"To get all these local bands in such a short time is really kind of cool. They said yes right away, no questions asked," said Morgan's mom, Colleen Miller. "They're all amazing kids."
The Millers are also selling guitar pick necklaces imprinted with "Rock for Alex" for $5 each. They assemble the necklaces themselves by drilling holes in the picks, cutting the leather and crimping the ends. The proceeds from the concerts and the necklace sales will go to Alex's charity of choice, Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. They've sold 200 necklaces so far, raising $600.

ALL FOR ALEX- Alex Berson, who was
diagnosed with nonHodgkin's
lymphoma, will be the recipient of
fundraisers organized by his friend
Morgan Miller. The Lindero Canyon
Middle School seventh graders were
inseparable before Alex's illness. Now,
to help Alex, Morgan and his family
have organized a couple of concerts
and fundraisers.

Bio
The Sheds is a 5-piece Ska/Punk/Reggae band hailing from Agoura Hills, California. The outfit was started in November 2005 by the three Miller brothers: Mac, Evan, and Morgan. More recently 2 friends was added as the fourth and fifth members, filling the gap in the group. The line-up now consists of: Mac Miller (17: drums/lead vocals), Evan Miller (16: bass/vocals), Morgan Miller (13: guitar), Duncan Murray (14: trumpet) and Stephen Palazo (18:trumpet). What the band lacks in age they make up in experience. The Sheds are not your average local garage band. They have played over 100shows in respected venues such as The Majestic Ventura Theater, The Canyon Club, The Knitting Factory, and The Key Club , along with a 2009 Appearance at The Warped Tour on the Kevin Says Stage. Their Ska Punk sound is highly influenced by bands such as Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, Bad Religion, Big D and The Kids Table, and Mad Caddies. Their debut full-length album was released in March 2009. Keep an eye out for these crazy kids or you'll regret it.
