The Etchings

Hometown musicians will have the honor of kicking off the 25th year of the Thursday at the Square concert series in downtown Buffalo.

Local indie rock band, The Etchings, will open for the Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros’ concert at Lafayette Square today, Thursday, June 2 at 5 p.m. - The Hamburg Sun

Often when the term “local indie band” comes to mind, people think about wannabe rock stars jamming in their parents’ garage for a few years before throwing on their yuppie suits and ties and heading out into the real world. This assumption could be made about a lot of bands, but that is exactly what makes people appreciate the rare gems like the Etchings. This Buffalo native foursome is the real thing. No gimmicks, no clichés, no nonsense. A few minutes into one of their sets and it’s apparent: This band really did their homework. Look out for songs like “Something in the Air” and “Hibernate” for beautiful songwriting, catchy riffs, technical drum work, and melodic vocals. The band has also been picking up steam recently. They have performed on stages all over the Northeast including Boston, Cambridge, and NYC. Again, the Etchings aren’t just another indie band: the words “This is not a Hobby” are clearly stated on their webpage. They will be headlining at Nietzsche’s for their first show ever in Buffalo this Sunday (Feb. 28). MoFaux, Sleeping Future, and the Tins open the show, starting at 10pm.

There are few things that can come together as well as this indie rock outfit. Comprised of four members from different backgrounds, they meld each others unique styles to produce one of the most powerful albums to come out of this city.

Rocco DellaNeve (vocals, guitar) grew up beating up on a bass guitar and traveling the country with acts like BeArthur and Jimmy Van Zant. Though he thoroughly enjoys tearing up jazz standards on the piano or laying down the funk on the bass, he was asked to step out of his comfort zone in order to be the guitarist for the Etchings. He jumped at the chance.

Nick Randall (vocals, guitar) first picked up a guitar as a baby. After years of struggling to sing Billy Joel tunes, he decided to pursue music professionally. It was at Berklee College of Music where Nick studied the masters and honed his skills. A fearless improviser, Randall enjoys the comfort of playing preconceived compositions along with letting his soul pour through the notes on this album.

Ben Randall (bass) is the perfect anchor to The Etchings. His concise lines are the perfect counterweight to the lofty style of the groups dual songwriter format. Ben has studied theory and composition with Geoff Perry of the gypsy jazz group Babik.

Jesse Rejewski (drums) is one of Buffalo's best-kept secrets. A wizard of audio, he is seen regularly out in the Buffalo music scene and beyond. His duties in the band reach far beyond just keeping time behind a drum kit. He recorded and engineered the bulk of the bands debut EP.

The Etchings can be seen February 27th at Neitzsche's at 9PM.

What?: Local alt-rock band with full-length debut collection, "Kindling Theory." The fast-rising quartet won the 2011 edition of the Artvoice B.O.O.M. Battle of the Bands. The group has opened for the likes of the Tea Party, Bedouin Soundclash, River City Extension and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

Why?: This group of schooled, able and adventurous musicians bring their vast and varied capabilities and influences - from jazz to funk, R&B to pop - to bear on a collective sound equal parts indie-rock and smartly composed pop. These guys can all play, big time, but they subsume individual musical egos to the collective good. "Kindling Theory" has legs, and the Etchings seem poised to run.
