"Longer than Sixty Minutes: Local Hip Hop Artist Set To Break The Trend"

“I got into music at a very young age. Since I was a little kid, I was into music and music videos. As time passed and life became life, I looked at music as an escape from the things around me. That love and connection with music always stuck with me and I have loved and lived it ever since.”

In the rural parts of Pennsylvania, music has taken many forms. Rock, metal and indie musical stylings have come from all parts of this area of the northeastern United States. Hip hop, however, has always been a genre that has seemed to be stymied in the rising crop of acts that you might see at your local bar or club. Sixty, a powerful new sensation out of Harrisburg, however, seems to poised to finally change a tide that has crashed against the beaches of modern music in the area.

Breaking out of the scene with his debut album, Saturn Synopsis, Christian Branch, PA native known in the music scene as “Sixty” seems to embody a new mentality in popular music from the area. “Every moment of life provides inspiration, good or bad. It is because of this that Sixty was born.” These words are part of Sixty’s own bio and embody the very spirit of his songs. It’s apparent, as shown in his recent hit in the area, “Forever,” that the artist doesn’t easily forget where he came from. “When I was around 10 or 11 I had a tiny Casio keyboard that I loved dearly. I would play songs that I heard on the radio or TV… After a few years of making beats I started to really get the itch to write lyrics (and) songs. I had done it a little in high school but producing was my primary focus.”

Yet every great artist knows that music isn’t usually a solo effort. “That song, (Forever), is the culmination of everything I strive for creatively, artistically and in life. It features some very amazing musicians, Zack Gingrich, Sean Saman and Jason Shaffer, all of who wrote their own solos and made the song a true collaboration. The message of the song is all about finding who you are and what inspires you. Then once you find it, you don’t stop working and chasing your dreams and finding your forever.”

Having just played a series of shows at the Coliseum in Camp Hill, Sixty seems ready to take his act further. Impressed crowds gathered around his performance and with his rising popularity in the area, it’s hard not to wonder where it all got its start. “As generic as it is, my inspiration comes from life. I take all of my experiences and the experiences of people l have connected with along my journey. I draw inspiration from hearing stories of people obtaining and achieving their dreams. I am also inspired by people who have let life get the best of them and have lost sight of what their dream was. I guess another way to put it, my inspiration is to inspire.”

Yet even with his growing popularity, Sixty seems ready to fight the stereotypes most up-and-coming hip hop artists face with the same high level of passion that surrounds his music. “The biggest problem is that there is a HUGE misconception about hip-hop. People are familiar with certain artist that talk about certain subject and basically rhyme about bullsh*t. They glorify the things that go on in our communities and make it seem as if that is what life is about. There is also a lot of violence associated with hip-hop which makes it very tough as well. Another aspect is that some people do not view hip-hop as a legitimate form of music. They look down on what we do and don’t give it the proper respect and recognition it deserves. I understand that part of all of this is because of a few lame “artists” that give us all a bad name. All we can do is to continue to create real music and open peoples eyes to what we do and what we stand for.”

"Sixty - Saturn Synopsis"

Sixty & I were both excited to get back in the studio with each other. When we started discussing ideas about these songs we couldn’t wait to get behind the microphones and mixing board to make it happen. We compliment each other very well and never know what’s going to happen when we start, but at the end of the day we are always excited about what we have created.

Sixty originally came from a background of hip hop and rap. But has drawn from a variety of music that has inspired him such as Pink Floyd and The Beatles to name a few.

In his own writing and production he has found ways to mesh all this together to be his own cohesive sound. With the release of “Saturn Synopsis” he has created a musical work of art that takes you on a journey.

For the recording of this album Sixty brought in numerous artists and friends to lend their talents including Zack Gingrich on guitar, Sean Saman for Cello and a rap feature with Godchild. I had the honor of Co-producing and also performing on his colorful compositions. Also to note that the amazing artwork was done by Jason Sullivan.

If you are looking for some new music to take you some place else & inspire you, this is it. From what i hear you may get new music from Sixty sooner than later!!! - Full Tilt Productions - Jason Shaffer

"Sixty"

What's the meaning behind the band's name?
Back when I was in high school, there were a group of us that all wrote rhymes and had freestyle cyphers. One day my best friend and I were in the middle of a freestyle session and I was really kicking some dope sh*t. So about 15 minutes in I stopped and told him to go but he was like "hell no there's no way I'm going in after that" So I kept going. After the 30 minute mark I was like, "aight G you ready" and he still refused. That's when I asked him if I spit for one hour would he spit then. He said yeah as if he didn't think it would happen. Well about 30 minutes later I couldn't spit any more and we were both is disbelief. The next day I got to school and the whole crew was like yoooo what's good "Sixty" (as in minutes). From there the legend was born.

How the band started??
Initially I got started as a producer. I had a little tiny casio keyboard that I would use to play the songs I would hear on radio and TV. As my friends started to get more serious about rhyming I would hop on a track here and there. Fast forward a few years later and I was completely involved in the production side and barely writing at all. Every once in a while I would make beats that were so dope that I would think, there's no way I'm giving these away. Eventually I realized that the only way these beats I was making would get proper use would be if I did it myself. Plus, I have a lot to say so I figured this would be the perfect forum. After a few months I was writing and recording my first mixtape "The Other Side Of Jupiter". There you have it

What's the message to transmit with your music??
I could go into this long as spiel but really it all comes down to a concept I thought of called 2-way Expression. I feel Art, in all of its forms, exists for this reason. First, it allows the artist the space to express themselves, be heard, and be understood. Second, it allows those who vibe with them know that they aren’t alone and that we can all relate. They express themselves through me. Ultimately my main goal is to inspire people to not get caught in the bullsh*t of life and just chase their dreams until they run out of time. That's what I'm doing now so that's what I preach.

What's your method at the time of writing a song??
For me it all starts with a beat. All of my songs are built around the beats that I make. I know as I'm making a beat if it will be a keeper. The concept and ideas come to me before the beat is even done. Once I have compiled all of the beats I then go into writing mode. Once I begin writing the songs, I won't do anything else creatively until they are done. Once those are laid down I start the process all over again

Which is your music influences??
My biggest influence and favorite artist of all time is Pink Floyd. There message of empathy is the reason I create hands down. I also love NaS and Lupe Fiasco because of that same reason, Plus lyrically they are the best that have ever done it in hip-hop/rap. My last major influence is of course The Beatles. Musically and sonically they have done things that to this day can't be matched. Those are def my tops.

What plans do you guys have for the future??
I am in the process of working on my next mixtape. We also are working on booking shows and generating a deafening buzz on the live scene. We are working on a push for College radio with a campaign we are calling our College Crash Landing. Plus collaborating with other artist like GodChild, Knoxx, Solo and a few others. I just want to be the Ruler Of The Universe.

Which has been the funniest prank you guys have been or took part while on tour or after a show??
Haven't really pulled any pranks yet. That's something that will come together as we book some more gigs. I'll have an update on that in our next interview.

If you guys were stranded in the middle of nowhere after a show or while on tour. The help is 65 miles away from where you guys are, ¿Who would you guys send to look for help? And if while the rest wait, there's no food and the only way to feed yourself is by eating each other, ¿Who would you eat first?
Well I'm kinda chill so I would probably have to send our manager to go. She doesn't mess around and is all about getting things done. Then my brother would probably just eat me because I'm bigger than he is.

Which country you guys would love to play?
I would def love to play Japan and look forward to the day we do. I have always had a deep respect and admiration for Japanese culture. Plus they have a very unique sense of style and fashion. Plus I'm obsessed with anime.

With which bands you guys would love to share stage??
Hands down, without a doubt The Floyd. I'm working on a way to bring Richard and Syd back. Seriously though def would be the Floyd.

Are you guys OK, with the direction the band is going actually?
Absolutely! Since my music is so unique it is a lot easier for me to stay in my own lane. Plus all the beats are made in house so it is all about our sound. As long as I remember how music saved me and where it has brought me, I'm confident in the fact that I'll always be on the right path. - Vents Magazine: Interviews
