"'Renewed' offers original, melodic music"

Thursday, December 6, 2007 - 9A

By Tamara Ward, Correspondent

Listeners looking for a break from today's overwhelming supply of new CDs featuring deejays' rap or monotonous rock-and-roll beats may find a refreshing sound on "Renewed", a newly released CD by local resident Paula Chafetz Snyder.

The disk contains 15 original songs, each song with a unique character - from thoughtful music poetry to a song with Latin flavor - but with common threads of blues and jazz.

"My material is melodic; it's pretty easily identifiable," Snyder said. "I think that what makes it different is it's probably back to more basic music. You can hear the lyrics, you can hear the vocals, you can hear the story, and the expression."

Snyder said she wasn't expecting to release a music CD at this time in her life. She has been writing and performing music throughout most of her life and compiled demos earlier in her music career.

"I wanted to get some of my old songs and new songs out bigger than I could perform them myself," she said.

In addition to lead vocals, Snyder performs backup harmonies and both guitar and piano on the CD. She also brought in other musicians to enchance the sound.

"As I started recording and working on (the CD), I found I could put more harmonies and more parts and more sounds together," she said.

Having taken a six-week break from singing after a neck surgery, the chance that a future surgery might have an adverse affect on her voice also prompted her to record the CD, she said.

Snyder said that immersing herself in her music with the CD was like a revival, enabling her to both work full time and to be creative.

"The love of music always has been in my life, and I've never wanted to let go," she said.

If you missed her performance at Java Divine earlier this month, Snyder's website, pcsnydermusic.com, lists upcoming performances, offers previews of her music and includes a link to a website where "Renewed" can be purchased.

NEVER TOO LATE? Debut original CD, Renewed, has just been released by Paula Chafetz Snyder of Raleigh, NC. Appropriately named, it contains both earlier & more recently penned original songs, presented in a variety of styles. With new - yet old/wise ideas, both contemporary and nostalgic issues to express, find some gritty blues, mellow jazz, a folksy lullaby, thoughtful musical poetry, a song with Latin flavor, and a few jagged edges of rock & roll. Top that off with a contemporary ballad and there is a little something for everyone! Ive been told Im a vocal chameleon indicates Ms. Snyder. Renewed interweaves common threads of blues & jazz, though each song has its own unique character. The musical arrangements are meant to enhance the vocals, highlighting lyric expression.

A new motivational theme emerges from the final song on the CD -- Never Too Late, where Paula energetically expresses a dream anguished by the frustrations of everyday limitations, yet still exuding excitement about the possibilities of returning to a music career while balancing love & remarriage at this time in her life.

Born in Detroit, MI, Paula experienced a variety of music styles in her earlier years, ranging from ethnic music, to nostalgia & show tunes, and contemporary bands of the day. She was introduced to blues & jazz during her college years. Paula performed folk & pop music as a soloist; top-40, country-rock, & oldies dance music in a duet; later returning to nostalgia & show tunes as a soloist again in more recent years. Her writing has similarly spanned styles from folk to adult contemporary pop, jazz & blues, country-rock, additionally including some child-friendly material. Always a strong vocalist, her instrumentation stayed in the background, allowing the audience to hear the lyrics, and connect with the emotions of any given song presented. Renewed remains true to this approach and Paulas voice, though experienced, sounds ageless.

Renewed was recorded at Studio 415 in Clayton, NC. Paul Barton, owner & sound engineer, co-produced the CD. Paula performed all the lead & back up vocals and most of the core instruments (piano, rhythm guitar), adding fill-in tracks with the keyboard & synthesizer. In addition to his sound-recording & mixing input, Paul (also a musician) added lead guitar, bass & percussion tracks to the compilation. Local guest musicians, Paul Bomar (jazz guitar), Miner Gleason (viola & violin), Doug Harwood (tenor & alto sax), Andy Hunt (flugel horn), and Guy Percy (bass), added some very special enhancements.

Paula has worn many hats through the years from vagabond to wife, musician to agent, creative soloist to board-member, teacher to parent. Her life experience touches every song and her every song touches someone's life.

Her first original CD, appropriately named “Renewed”, was released in October 2007. It contains both old & new original numbers from sweet to sultry presentations.
