Musicians in the spotlight

One of these days you're really going to do it. You're going to load up that guitar and find an open microphone somewhere, in some local coffee house or pub, and you're finally going to let the world hear that song you've been working on.

Thousands of intrepid would-be troubadours and seasoned songsters do just that all across the nation every night of the week.

Around here, they show up at Wide Open Mike Night at the Sit 'n Bull Pub in Maynard every Wednesday.

It's an old and still-thriving tradition. Open mike doesn't always draw many spectators, but it always brings together those who would be heard, in music and in friendship.

The Sit 'n Bull draws about 15 or so regulars on any given Wednesday, to sing, strum, pick and play, and anyone is welcome.

Open mike at the Sit 'n Bull is cozy and casual evening, run for the last couple of years by singer/songwriter Patty Keough.

Keough, whose music has been dubbed "experimental folk," has been around the greater Boston folk music scene for many years. She was named "Best of Folk" in the 2001 Worcester Phoenix music poll, has toured nationally and internationally, since 1999, and she opened for the Boston Pops in Hyannis in 2001. She's been compared to Joni Mitchell, Melissa Etheridge, and Janice Joplin, but, she says, she tailors her performances to fit the club and the audience when she plays.

Even after years on stage, Keough still remembers how nervous she was when she started out. That's why she runs the open mike night - she wants to provide a place for other musicians to try out new material and nibble away at their stage fright.

And that's why Keough's open mike is "wide" open.
It's a place for musicians to come together, try out new songs, learn, and relax while honing their talents. And Keough is a natural for her Wednesday night role.

She's easy-going, highly approachable, and wildly supportive of her flock of performers, encouraging the social aspects of the evening.
"It's great - people usually show up early, hang around, get something to eat, and just have fun," Keough says.

Keough starts the evening's performances at 7 p.m. with a casual open jam. Someone picks a song and all the open mikers play on it, then someone picks another song, and on they go.

"It's mostly original stuff, but we'll do covers in between just for fun," says Keough.

At 8:30, Keough starts to call the players up one by one for a couple of songs each. She'll give each performer as much time as she can, depending on how many want to play.

A featured performer will take the stage at 9:30 for about an hour, and then Keough opens the stage again for any who want to play, and she keeps the stage open until the bar closes, if that's what it takes to give everyone a chance.

The first time I heard this CD, it never left my player for at least a week. The songs range form quiet and soulful to fast and funny. My favorite song is Just One More. I can't listen to it enough. I can't wait to hear more from Patty in the future!!!

Here is a copy of some correspondence I had with Patty three days after buying "Watching the World"..... "Hey Patty! I think a thank you is in order. Your CD has slapped me across the face, taken me outside a beaten me with raw emotion...I believe it was Ralph Waldo Emerson that said "If you laugh, think, and cry each day, you have had one heck of a day". I have laughed (a little), cried (a lot), and thought (way too much) while listening to your music over the past few days. I have defective tear ducts...I don't cry, not by choice, but because I can't...your songs have created one of the most wonderful emotions I could ever ask for...the gift of tears! Thank you so much!!! The smiles have been equally as wonderful. You have provoked a lot of memories to come to the forefront of my consciousness. This effort by Ms Keough is a breath of fresh air in this age of the Britney's & Whitney's of Pop culture. Patty's clarity comes though on each track and is sure to draw the listener in immediately. Heartfelt and mature, Ms Keough is sure to resonate for a long time.

Sexy Musical Setting

I love the low lit setting of the music area. The setup of the stage is ideal for playing to a large or small audience. I heard an intimate performace by Patty Keough, a singer/songwriter who kicks someone like Jewel in the @$$...Patty's voice is stunning and her original material shines with charm and wit. She'll be back again on 10/19/02; don't miss it! The acoustics rival other places in and around town and I can understand why musicians love it. The bartending/wait staff is pleasant - but the down side to going here is no food served! Be sure to eat before showing up. They will let you bring in something from outside...but I'd prefer to be able to order something in house!
