One of our favorite shows of South by Southwest (SXSW) was Meliss FX performing at The Rio (aka Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant 301 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX). Behind the façade of this innocent looking restaurant was an electro main stage that was graced by the day’s most cutting-edge “electro-preneurs,” including a closing set by The Villains which literally had to have the lights turned on to disperse the glow stick toting masses from their electro-induced trance out into the welcoming streets of downtown Austin.

Traveling back in time about eight hours we see the stage give birth to the duo of Melissa Breslow and Alex Zelenka aka Meliss FX...Melissa is performing her own sound check with her wireless microphone while Alex is booting his dual Mac Book Pro laptops and readying the multi-channel dj mixer for their SXSW induction.

They fired up the gear and the show began with little time for introductions and lots of time for booty shakin’ electro bass and progressive rhythms that filled the interior of this unsuspecting restaurant with radiant waves of peace, love, understanding and respect…all courtesy of this Los Angeles based independent female musician Meliss FX and her love for electronic music!

The crowd was not difficult to warm up and as the second track was dropping they were already in a dancing frenzy that had the entire place shaking! Even those sitting tableside in the back were getting their groove on, albiet mid-Chile Relleno!

Pounding echo and mystifying crystal reverb were laid on nice and thick to Melissa’s vocals throughout the set as Alex expanded upon phrases like “I can do it better / prepare to fly” and “Techno electro makes me come alive / up in the sky” with his masterful mixing skill (mind you he’s managing her vocal fx along with the live re-mixing and editing of at least fourteen tracks throughout the mix) (think 1.5 instrumental songs per 1 vocal “song”). If that seems fuzzy, it’s because these two are pushing the envelope when it comes to a Live PA/DJ Mix!

Our personal favorite “Love Will Come to You” was the fourth song of the set and instantly won the crowd over with the catchy hook “Love yourself and love will come to you” repeating over Benny Benassi-esque 4/4 beats and progressive, melodic shifts that give way for the vocals to expand on the track and breathe in and out in tandem with the enveloping pop-sensible electronics. Great work and it will definitely let you get lost in it if you aren’t careful (which, if you were wondering, is a good thing).


Although electronic music generally takes longer to progress than most other pop-sensible styles and SXSW performances are inherently 30-45 minutes at the longest…Meliss FX managed to squeeze nine invigorating songs into their set. The second to last being “I’m So Glad,” which may have (in its own little way) been a prelude to the passing collaboration between these two extremely talented individuals.

Shortly after SXSW, Melissa and Alex were invited to play a round of gigs at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, FL. They went and played a handful of shows together and several others apart. After this festival/conference was over Melissa had reported that Alex and her were no longer working on Meliss FX together and that his spot had been filled by a local DJ from LA.


We were very fortunate to have witnessed this milestone in the formation and success of Meliss FX and can’t wait to see how far this shining star will travel.
