"The band has a great singer in Petra Struijs, who got more and more into performing during the show. Sebas Honing was at first a bit timid at the side of the stage, but performed very well on guitar. Rythmic duo Joost Maglev on bass and Rik Bruineman on drums provided a solid rhythm section. And Joop de Rooij, hidden behind his big keyboard rack, completed the sound with a broad tapestry of keys.
In short, a fine debut of a band who can stand their ground within the vast amount of gothic metal bands Holland already has."

“The final act of the evening was Galanor. Right from the start, the band looked great and passionate, bringing well played powerpop. The inspiration of bands like Genesis & Nightwish were obvious heard in the sound. The fully packed venue Dormibellagot reacted very enthousiatic to the show.
The jury was unanimous on all three aspects of the performance; Music, technics and presentation , Galanor was by far the best of the evening and will be participating in the finals on 25th of April on the big stage. “

Presenting self-described "pop-metal" from the Netherlands, the band Galanor flows in and out of memorable choruses and groove with creative use of negative space proving that silence is powerful.

The song "Reign" takes one back in time to a Queen demanding submission and loyalty from her people. Both guitar and keyboard solos were well written and well placed.

With "Silver Seigh" the story of infatuation dances around and plays with the soul. This song starts you out with a foot stomping march then into a candlelight embrace. The vocal harmonies in the end add another color bringing out a new dimension to a tempting melody.

"Superman" starts with a recorded riff which sounds like a record playing in its production, but the vocals start a song to which many could compare their own lives. "They never seem to understand; their fate lies entirely in their own hands" signals a theme many may consider purely American; the idea of searching for a "superman" to rescue each from his or her own demons and decisions. The dynamic way the female vocals are offset by the harmonizing male voices makes the chorus stand out as a dichotomy of the simple idea that we each control our own fate, but we desperately search for that hero to make us safe and whole.

Galanor have a bright future ahead of them. Sit back, be patient, and listen. The lines will appear.

Een snelle ‘Google-search' leert dat er een Amerikaanse wiskundige is die Stewart Galanor heet en een fantasy-serie met een held Galanor, de barbaarse heerser van Atlantis. Drie keer raden welke naam dichter bij de kern van de Nederlandse goth-metalband Galanor komt. Ondertussen is de band, oorspronkelijk een initiatief van toetsenist Joop De Rooij en Rik Bruineman, die de band al lang weer verlaten heeft, inmiddels gevraagd Nederland te vertegenwoordigen op het prestigieuze Kansai Music Conference in Japan. Dat mag dan een soort marketingkunstje van de Japanners zijn om hun eigen muziek over het voetlicht te krijgen, maar toch...

Ondertussen is Galanor nog niet gestrikt door een platenlabel en moeten we het doen met de demo "Fragments", die je tegen elk aannemelijk bod kan kopen via de website van de band. Dat is nog niet zo'n gekke gedachte, want als eerste indruk van wat de dame en heren in hun mars hebben is dit best heel goed. Pittige rock, verdienstelijke composities, een goede en krachtige zangeres, een volwassen geluid en een frisse uitstraling. Drie nummers die zwaar leunen op de lijn Nightwish, Within Temptation en noem nog eens een gothic-club met een zangeres en zware gitaren?

Dat is het grootste manco van Galanor op dit moment: de band leunt nog te zwaar op de grote voorbeelden, is te weinig oorspronkelijk. Tegelijk is dat in dit genre niet noodzakelijkerwijs een al te fors probleem. Daarbij: de goede luisteraar hoort dappere pogingen de grenzen van het genre op te zoeken. Het mooie a capella intermezzo in Superman is een briljante vondst. Ook de ruimte die de band inruimt voor het functionele toetsenwerk is een verademing. En zelfs waar de composities de blauwdrukken tot op de centimeter volgen zijn het op zijn minst erg goeie liedjes die prettig in het gehoor liggen.

Je kunt op basis van deze drie korte nummers onmogelijk een voorspelling doen over de toekomst van Galanor maar het zou mij niet verbazen als deze band tot veel verrassingen in staat is. Per slot van rekening bleek die Stewart Galanor ook boeken te kunnen schrijven over wie JFK vermoord heeft. Die Japanners gaan opkijken, dat is duidelijk.
