- Metal France
I recently saw the thrash metal band Fatality live in Phila, PA and I loved the band's CD so I thought and interview as in order. I emailed band member Spencer LeVon some questions and here is what he said to them:
MC: Let's get the boring question out of the way. How did the band come to be and what is the current line-up?
SL: Fatality has been together since 2004. We have the competitive edge because the guys in my band are my best friends and have been for some time. I started the band with guitar superstar Eytan Gordon. We have been riffing since grade 6 but have been best friends since grade 1. Along the way we came across Adam Zlotnik who shared the same guitar teacher as Eytan, and turned out to be a great fit. Adam came across Andrew Suarez who is a complete savage of a Drummer. We are a power 4 piece and at this point we are a functional unit.
MC: How long has the current line-up been together and did you have to go through any line-up changes to get to be where the band is today?
SL: This lineup has been the same for about 2 or 3 years. We had one painful line-up change however. My brother Mason used to be on skins, but made a decision to go to university in Ottawa. We wanted to really start digging in our scene, so I had to kick my own brother out of the band. Adam knows Andrew from his high school and he has turned out to be one of the best metal drummers in Toronto.
MC: Your new CD is easily one of the best releases I have heard this year. Is this your 1st release or is their other releases floating around?
SL: This is our first official release. We have recently released a free download on the Internet as a gift to anyone who has been into our music, as well as a tool to maybe get a few new people to our gigs. Again we recorded it all ourselves and released it independently. Check out http://fatality.bandcamp.comand get yourselves some free shit!
MC: I know you put the CD out yourselves. Any reason why you did that and decided not to with a label?
SL: There are a few reasons that we didn’t do it with a label. The main one was that it is hard to release a first album on a label without getting robbed blind. Record labels don’t take too many chances these days so now they take more then they give. Plus we are smart, calculated and organized young men. We know how to do these things by ourselves, so why would we choose to have more hands in our pockets. Also an attractive part of doing things independently is that everything we release is exactly as we envision it. We aren’t influenced by anyone with outside interests bugging us to change certain things or ideas in exchange for money. Therefore our product is pure as Columbian blow. Nothing added or taken away, just pure expression.
MC: I know your on the road and the tour has a few shows left before it ends. What has been some of the best things about it and the worst things and how have you been received by the crowds so far?
SL: We are taking well to this lifestyle. I’d have to say the worst part is probably the physical ware and tare. You can’t always sleep or eat well on the road. Also we are young dudes on our first tour, so we are drinking way too much and partying almost every night, so it takes a toll on your general mood and well being. This hasn’t had any effect on our performances though. Every night we go out and play to our best ability. The crowds have been more then amazing. We seem to be making a mark on every town we travel to. We are just having fun every night on stage and I think the crowds are connecting with that easy-going, fun loving attitude.
MC: After this tour wraps up what are your plans for the rest of 2011?
SL: We have a huge west coast tour lined up for July. We are doing west coast Canada and doing the west coast of the USA and then circling back up to Canada. We are also writing in the meantime and planning on recording a new album and doing it all over again!
MC: How is a song written and does it sometimes take you a long time come up with a certain riff and where is the weirdest place you came up with a musical idea?
SL: Our band functions like a machine at a factory. The tunes usually start with Eytan Gordon our guitar player. He is a true wizard. He usually works out ideas with our bass player Adam until they have something to hold on to. Then we get together in a room and bash the shit out of it from all angles until we have something we are proud of. We basically put pressure at all angles until we end up with a diamond. We are all very passionate about our tunes so it can take some time, but there is no way we are going to half ass it and pump out music that isn’t our best. Because there are a million bands who are writing dynamite material, and we want to be at the top with them drinking and playing shows.
MC: Thrash metal made a little bit of a comeback a few years back. Do you see thrash metal sticking around or do you sort of seeing it dying out agai - Metalcore Fanzine

Zombie Holocaust font strikes again! For once, it doesn’t come with terrible music. Fatality are Canucks who play the “goofy thrash” popular in the late 80's/ early 90's. Solos fly with reckless abandon, the bass is audible and practically so are the beers being cracked open. These guys must have awesome parties. - Decibel Magazine
Review by Natalie Zed; Concert Photography by Adam Wills
On tonight’s episode of My Stupid Life: Metal Edition, I managed to give myself food poisoning, doubtlessly because of the sketchy ham that topped the iffiest piece of pizza I’ve eaten in years. The infamous Natalie Zed Stomach of Iron is not what it used to be, so I spent a good chunk of this show either putting on a brave face or hiding in the bathroom, praying for sweet oblivion to embrace me. Despite the grotesque physical discomfort I was in, this show was a blast. I salute all the bands for showing me a good time — this night stands out in my mind as a particularly excellent show in 2010, and that was despite my innards actively trying to kill me.
An increasing amount of metal shows are happening at the Mod Club and, generally speaking, I approve. The stage is great, the sound tends to be solid and the lighting is excellent — intrepid Hellbound photographer extraordinaire Adam Wills is always pleased when we’re covering a show at this particular venue, as the odds of his photos looking extra slick increase significantly. However, I have one major beef: seven dollars for a fucking beer!?! And by beer, I don’t mean something obscure and heavy like Maudite; I am talking a goddamn Steamwhistle. With any tip at all that’s eight dollars, friends — highway robbery. Making drinks prohibitively expensive for a room full of metalheads is completely backwards thinking.
This concludes the Complaints Department portion of the review. Now, onto the bands.
Toronto thrashers Black Elysium started the night with a set that felt distinctly like a warm-up for the rest of the bands. Like most ’80s-inspired thrash acts, they advertise the sizzling intensity of their sound. Live, however, the experience was a lot less like a dip in a cauldron of boiling oil and more like a soothing soak in a hot tub. Their tunes are straightforward and catchy, working within the aesthetic they’ve chosen well enough, but when on stage they don’t commit fully to their performance. Their energy level was surprisingly low, resulting in a chill, groovy experience for a thrash band. I’d like to see them throw everything they have into a show to see what they’re capable of.
The night truly began when Fatality took the stage. And I need to emphasize the word “took,” because it’s something that always strikes me about their performances: whatever stage they happen to be on, they own. I have a great deal of affection for Fatality; they are there to have a great time on stage and make sure the audience has an equal amount of fun — and also that they will get back from a crowd exactly what they put forth. So, they put in everything they can possibly give: all the spit, sweat, screams and shit-eating grins they can muster, and their audiences scream it right back. Fatality managed to get just about everyone in the Mod Club moving, stomping, throwing elbows and grinning ear to ear. Their stage presence is strong enough to stand out on any line-up, even with the likes of Holy Grail and Exodus.
I owe Bonded by Blood an apology, or rather, my stomach does. Their entire set, I was desperately trying to get air outside or whispering to a toilet affectionately. (“You’re my only friend, toilet; you understand.”) Next time, guys.
Speaking of affection, I also have a special, warm place in my cold, little ice pellet of a heart for Holy Grail. I last saw these L.A.-based shredders when they opened for Eluveitie and Amon Amarth back in April, another show that still glows in my mind as an unreasonable amount of fun. (Also, one day, Johan Hegg and I will be wed. Just saying.) Holy Grail certainly know how to have fun, a necessary characteristic for any band that work within the classic ’80s metal aesthetic. Unlike many of their comrades-in-thrash, however, Holy Grail invest a great deal of effort into their look. Both their sound and visual aesthetic are extremely posh and polished, giving them the stage presence of gleaming metal paladins. They played a selection of material from their debut EP, Improper Burial, as well as their upcoming full-length, Crisis In Utopia. Their cover of Accept’s “Fast As A Shark” (which appears on their EP) was particularly strong. I look forward to watching these old-school rockers thrash it up again the next time they inevitably come through Toronto.
Just as my energy level was reaching a crisis point, the audience’s had risen to a fever pitch, becoming positively explosive by the time Exodus took the stage. I made it about halfway through their 90-odd-minute set before throwing in the towel, but what I saw was absolutely spectacular. They are without a doubt a band not to miss, and I was glad for every moment I hung in to soak up some of the torrent they unleashed upon the crowd. In my weakened state, I could only passively absorb the show, but most of the crowd drank it in greedily in deep, thirsty gulps. Vocalist Rob Dukes baited the crow - Hellbound.ca
Toronto’s own Fatality took the stage around 1:00am to much fanfare. Acting as our gracious hosts for the evening, they seemed to take a personal interest in showing everyone a good time. Pulling material from their debut album Beers from the Grave and the new “T.F.E.S.” demo (that’s “Thrash. Fuck. Eat. Sleep.” for those keeping track), we were treated to one furious blast of old school style thrash after another. Fans pushed and shoved their way to the front of the stage, and at one point vocalist Spencer LaVon asked, ever so politely, if he could stage dive onto them. This spirit of friendship and camaraderie are what Fatality have built their reputation on, and I have no doubt they will be well received as they head out on their Western Annihilation Tour this week. - Hellbound.ca

If ever an epic journey was undertaken to get to a show (one that was in the same bloody city that I started out in, anyway), that journey happened this night.
The full line-up for this show consisted of Fatality, Vindicator, Manahan, Aggressor and Razorwire. It happened to be a friend’s birthday, so we swung by his apartment to down some vodka & cranberry juice and watch planet earth. After wishing him well, we embarked on what we thought would be a simple jaunt down Queen, but ended up being a complete TTC shitshow. A combination of set-up for the Much Music Video Awards and NXNE festivities raging meant that we wound up walking nearly all the way from Front & Fleet to Queen East & Broadview. Several times along the journey, Lily the Pirate and I briefly considered giving up and turning back, concerned that there might not even be any show left to enjoy by the time we got there. In the end, however, we proved our mettle (har har) and arrived at The Blue Moon around 12:30am—just in time to see Fatality take the stage.
I can wholeheartedly say that Fatality were worth both the voyage and the cover price all on their own. They didn’t just put on a show; they threw a party. A few songs into their riotous set, the band members were inviting the crowd on stage to do beer bongs with them. They showered the crowd with both affection and free merch, and despite the fact that it was hot as all hell in the venue (I can only imagine how it must have felt on stage), Fatality’s enthusiasm never flagged. They raged through the entire performance, seemingly tireless, never for a moment hinting that they would like to be anywhere but on that stage, performing for that audience.
Fatality loved the crowd at The Blue Moon, and the crowd loved them right back. While metalheads are usually a cheerful, congenial bunch, this evening they were positively ebullient. Long-haired boys roamed around the pit, grins plastered across their faces, drinking beer straight from the pitcher. Everyone’s arms found their way around everyone else’s shoulders. For the last few songs, Fatality actually invited everyone on stage with them to sing and drink. It was one of those shows that truly warmed the cockles of my black little heart. - Hellbound.ca

Fatality recently announced dates for their Western Annihilation Tour that will see them venture across west coast Canada and US.

We are playing with a ton of great American and Canadian acts such as BONDED BY BLOOD, ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST, SKULL HAMMER (Canada) and VEKTOR. Holy shit Nose! We will also be spending roughly a week in California. I have been warned about California. They say eat lots of In and Out bergs, Stay out of Compton and always, always, always check for an Adam’s Apple. I must say, I am very excited. Hope to see some of you on our travels. In additional news, the band is kicking off their "Western Annihilation Tour" that will see them venture across west coast Canada and USA.
Spencer Le Von, vocalist/guitarist of Fatality commented on the tour.
"That’s right folks. Enough of the East, bring on the West. This is gonna get messy folks. The East was merely an appetizer. Its time to extend our version of Heavy Metal Indulgence to the masses. Get some sleep, friends."

Bio
Toronto, Canada's high-energy, modern thrash monsters Fatality have been cranking out beer-drenched nightmares together since 2003. Known for their wild, riotous live peformances and their peerless work ethic, they have been independently booking and promoting their own shows, creating great merch, touring North America, and making some great tunes along the way. Their debut, Beers From The Graves, was an irreverent and horror-themed album that eschewed seriousness in favour of hard living and good times. After supporting that record with North American tours, and being invited to share the stage with the likes of Municipal Waste, Razor, Exodus and Evile, Fatality are gearing up to unleash their sophomore album on their adoring public.
Their new record is at once a darker and more mature effort, with more complex arrangements and sophisticated concepts, that still retains their trademark energy and commitment to drunken mayhem. Set to be released in mid-2013, their new album is an exploration of the inner landscape of the mind, where addled thoughts and horror-polluted dreams are held up to musical scrutiny. Monstrous, ambitious, and sardonically funny as ever, Fatality are taking their unique sound and boundless energy to the next level.
