Stouffville’s Bonny Morgan hopes her song is selected as the new anthem for NHL hockey broadcasts on CBC-TV. Her entry is near the top of all songs in the contest. The semifinalists will be announced next Saturday, with the winning song unveiled Oct. 11.
Whitchurch-Stouffville residents are proving they really do love the good old hockey game.
Bonny Morgan, a musician and Stouffville resident, has entered CBC’s Hockey Anthem Challenge, and is sitting in the top one per cent of the 15,000 entries.
“I just couldn’t not do it (create the anthem),” she said. “I was so thrilled to find out I was in the top-rated section.”
Ms Morgan isn’t the only Stouffvillite to enter the competition. Other entries from Whitchurch-Stouffville, according to the CBC website, are Orest Hrynewich, Robert Volk, Matthew Volk, Marion Drexler, Aaron Clubine, Caleb Winters, Iggy Natoli and John Wolff.
CBC created the competition after the rights to the song were bought by TSN earlier this year.
The winner of the competition gets $100,000.
In addition, CBC will pay the songwriter half the royalties for the public performance of the theme. Hopefuls had to submit a jingle or song, an instrumental or song with lyrics. While this may seem hard to many, Ms. Morgan said she came up with her theme right away.
“I had to give it a try because a song came to me almost immediately and that was just it.”
Judges from the network will determine the 20 semifinalists, which will be revealed during a CBC broadcast Oct 4.
After the public has three days to vote for two finalists, the winner will be announced during the first 2008-09 Saturday broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada on Oct. 11.
The California native and Stouffville resident writes music, plays instruments and sings.
Ms Morgan has been a professional singer since age 14.
She’s performed all around the world, including China, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Japan.
She’s also sung at the Royal York Hotel, Niagara Fallsview Casino and Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
Ms Morgan said her inspiration was her mother, although she was influenced by Barbra Streisand, Nancy Wilson, Frank Sinatra and Gordon Lightfoot.
She released her first CD, Acoustically Yours, with the help of her husband, last year.
For Ms Morgan and the other hopefuls, all they can do is wait for the hockey season.
“Two of my friends (who entered the contest) are also on the front page of the top-rated section, so at least I’m keeping good company,” she said.

Bonny Morgan is the Jill of all trades, in the singing world that is.
The California native and Stouffville resident writes music, plays instruments and sings. And it’s all in a day’s work.
“I’m always working on music, all the time,” she said.
“I sing for a couple hours everyday. I use my voice as my melody.”
Ms Morgan has been a professional singer since age 14.
She’s performed all over the world, including China, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Japan.
She’s also sung at several events and venues such as the Royal York Hotel, Niagara Fallsview Casino and Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
“I never really decided it (to become a singer), it just sort of happened,” Ms Morgan said.
Her mother used to sing, and a few of her relatives played musical instruments, but none were as involved in singing as she is.
Ms Morgan said her inspiration was her mother, although she was influenced by singers such as Barbra Streisand, Nancy Wilson, Frank Sinatra and Gordon Lightfoot.
She also admits to also being inspired by the everyday individual.
“I’m inspired by many people, living their own truths,” she said. “I’m influenced by everyone and every type of music.”
With all that singing, one might think it would take a toll on her vocal chords, but Ms Morgan said she has been to an ear, nose and throat specialist and she’s in good shape.
Besides performing a couple times a week, Ms Morgan appears at the third annual Stars of Stouffville Feb. 23 at the Christ Church Anglican.
Several other female performers are singing at the fundraiser for WhiStle Radio of Stouffville.
Ms Morgan also released her first CD, Acoustically Yours, with the help of her husband, in November.
“There are some classic tunes, some of my own originals and a rewrite of a song.”
She hopes to continue making music and performing and, long-term, she hopes to become involved in charities.
As for right now, she’s happy with where she is and is going to continue making music.
“I think the music chooses you,” she said. “I’d like to continue doing what I’m doing in a lot of different areas.”
