"A five-piece multinational band specializing in a dazzling mixture of American jazz, Uighur flamenco and sub-continental percussion, Panjir are mainstays of the Beijing live circuit, extemporaneously following the melodies and rhythms of their tunes to new destinations at every show....
...There's not a whisper of complacency on any of these six tracks. You can almost feel the precision, craft and joy that went into the recording...
On disc, these brilliant compositions, although impressively recorded, suffer from a lack of visual accompaniment. Nevertheless, as an introduction to - though not a complete representation of - one of the city's best live acts, this is well worth the purchase price."
4/6 stars - Ian Sherman, music editor

Bio
Xinjiang is the westernmost region of China, bordering the nations of Central Asia, and a central location on the great silk road of antiquity, which united the cultures of Eurasia.
Panjir is a nine-piece group that introduces modern influences of improvisation into the rich musical heritage of the Uyghurs, a Turkic people who have lived in Central Asia for centuries.
Uyghur music is one of the oldest traditions of Asia and includes influences from Persia, India, Arabia, and the far east. A rich mix of percussion, exotic stringed instruments and wind instruments, Uyghur music lends itself well to the incorporation of modern improvisation, which is itself the product of centuries of development throughout the world.
Since its formation, Panjir has grown to become one of China's best known and critically acclaimed world music acts. With appearances on radio and TV in Australia, the UK, Germany, China and Hungary, the group has also started to build an international following, while the groups live shows in China have become well known.
