Ladies and Gentlemen! Sonyae Elise is in the building! ..So “Lady Rebel” how’s it going?

Everything is great! I have been recording non-stop! Also, doing a few shows here and there but nothing too heavy. I have been traveling quite a bit lately, handling business on both coasts; so life is treating me great! I am truly blessed.

You have a heavy background in acting, what made you decide to make the switch to artist mode?

My reason for pursuing lyricism was based on a desire to tell my own stories. I have so many thoughts and emotions bottled up inside of me that I need to share with the world, and lyricism is allowing me to do that. Acting allowed me to bring life to the stories of others, but my music is allowing me to bring life to the many stories that I need to tell.

“We Heard” (Re-Tweet) is the hot new single of the mix tape “Lady Rebel” tell the readers a little bit about that track.
It’s a fast tempo, high energy, slick-talking type of record. “Re-tweet” refers to the reiteration of different points and ad-libs throughout the song. In the song I talk about the bitters and gossipers of the world. I also take a few shots at those who sit behind the safety net of their computer screen and hate on the next person. I certainly have had many experiences with that. Overall it’s a fun, sarcastic song that I am sure people are going to enjoy.

What can we expect from the mix tape? any new producers and who is on it?

“Lady Rebel Vol. 1” is unlike any compilation of work that I have ever done. It’s young and fresh yet also raw and heartfelt; which was the overall concept for the mixtape. The process of putting this mixtape together was truly organic. I literally worked in the studio along with my team Midi Mafia 6-7 hours per day doing non-stop writing and recording. The producers on the mixtape are Midi Mafia, Ski Beatz , Kwame , A.U , Brite Ware, J.V., Sizzle, L.E and KDin.

What were your expectations during the whole processes of creating the mix tape

To be honest, I simply wanted to create the best mixtape that I could. I didn’t expect the amount of press nor the love and support that I have received lately. I am humbled, honored and truly appreciative that people are genuinely enjoying my music.

Talk to us about how you linked up with the well respected Midi Mafia production team?

I love Midia Mafia. Most people don’t know but Midi Mafia is like family to me. I have known them many years. I met them when I was 14 or 15 in New York at Sony Records. I gave them a CD and we chatted a bit. Since that day, we have been family.

Can we expect you intertwine your acting skills with your music some time soon?

Right now, I am focused on my music. However, I do plan to have a nice amount of theatrics and a few skits in my show once I hit the road. Certainly in the future you can expect me to be open to movies, plays and all things entertainment.

What’s up next for the Lady Rebel?

I am excited to say that “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” dropped on June 14th, 2010. I am also back in the studio working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” and simultaneously recording new songs for my first official LP.

Sonyae Elise how you feeling? Thank you for taking the time out to talk with us. What’s been going on with you?

Well, I have been recording non-stop! Also, doing a few shows here and there but nothing too heavy. I have been traveling quite a bit lately, handling business on both coasts.

Jersey is in the building! How has being on the east coast influenced you musical wise?

I bow to those who have come before me and thank them for laying the foundation that I am standing on right now. Some may say that I have big shoes to fill. However, I choose to believe otherwise. I am not looking to fill the shoes of New Jersey greats such as Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill, I am simply looking to carry the torch that they have ignited as far as I can and eventually pass it off to the next talented, focused and dedicated individual who will continue to represent for New Jersey. I intend on staying true to myself and never losing sight of my beginning during my journey to my end. I plan to treat my first like my last, my last like my first and my thirst like the first song I sang.

The single ‘We Heard’ (Re-Tweet) is dope! Is that subject matter something you actually dealt with?

Without doubt, I have experienced my fair share of “online hate” from others. I have been “tweeted” and “facebooked” about by people who would never say my name; instead they would use context clues to hint around to the fact that they were talking about me. It’s actually quite comical rather than harmful when you think about it. I always respect someone more if they come to me directly and address their issues with me.

Tell the readers about the creative process you took in making your new mix tape “Lady Rebel” Vol 1.

How would you describe your overall sound on this project?

My sound in general is raw and heartfelt. I usually sing from a place of experience; rather it be my own experience or that of someone close to me. “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” certainly allowed me to play with a variety of tracks but overall, my sound is raw and heartfelt.

I see you have done a lot of live performances, how important is stage presence for an up and coming artist?

Stage presence is extremely important in my opinion. I was raised around entertainers, so taking control of a stage has always been quite natural and easy for me. However, I certainly attribute a large portion of how comfortable I am on stage to the many years I spent acting. I’ve never been afraid of a crowd; as a matter of fact, when I am in performance mode I feel most liberated and free.

You recently did an unplugged performance, how was that experience and what was the feedback like?

The experience was phenomenal. There was maybe only 100 select people there so it provided for an intimate setting which is something I really enjoyed. There has been feedback from both the industry and also people who support me and overall, it’s all been quite good. I’m thankful for that.

You made the switch from acting to singing; do you still incorporate some acting in your performances?

Absolutely. Let me reiterate, my many years of acting certainly contribute to how comfortable I am on stage. In my show, I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve so that my audience can really feel what I’m saying and really feel the emotion that I have put into the song. Certainly when I hit the road with a more elaborate show, you can expect skits and scenes as interludes from song to song.

So Ms. Rebel what do you have planned for us in the future?

I am excited to say that “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” dropped on June 14th, 2010. I am also back in the studio working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” and simultaneously recording new songs for my first official LP.

Having a online presence is so important in the industry, where can the readers find you online?

We are real excited to have you with us today Sonyae, let the readers know the story behind the name “Lady Rebel”

Lady Rebel is synonymous with Sonyae Elise: Rebellious, Raw, Heartfelt and Passionate. That’s why I love music. It allows me to be all that I am; without judgment, and gives me the venue to channel, release and share my experiences with those who support me.

Hailing from Jersey home to a lot of east coast talent how do you intend to keep Jersey on the map in the R&B scene?

I bow to those who have come before me and thank them for laying the foundation that I am standing on right now. Some may say that I have big shoes to fill. However, I choose to believe otherwise. I am not looking to fill the shoes of greats such as Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill, I am simply looking to carry the torch that they have ignited as far as I can and eventually pass it off to the next talented, focused and dedicated individual who will continue to represent for New Jersey. I intend on staying true to myself and never losing sight of my beginning during my journey to my end. I plan to treat my first like my last, my last like my first and my thirst like the first song I sang.

Your hot new single ‘We Heard’ (ReTweet) off your new mix tape “Lady Rebel” is very catchy. How did you all come up with that?

It’s a fast tempo, high energy, slick-talking type of record. “Re-tweet” refers to the reiteration of different points and ad-libs throughout the song. In the song I talk about the bitters and gossipers of the world. I also take a few shots at those who sit behind the safety net of their computer screen and hate on the next person. I certainly have had many experiences with that. Overall it’s a fun, sarcastic song that I am sure people are going to enjoy.

Is there a particular sound you look for when working on a new track for your next mixtape with iStandard and Coast 2 Coast?

I prefer dynamics. I love tracks that move and have some elevation. I love a good build up. I love drums, horns and overall just music that feels live. When it comes to performing, I would always prefer to sing with a live band; it’s truly my forte.

You have a deep resume in acting, what made you decide to start concentrating on your music career?

My reason for pursuing lyricism was based on a desire to tell my own stories. I have so many thoughts and emotions bottled up inside of me that I need to share with the world, and lyricism is allowing me to do that. Acting allowed me to bring life to the stories of others, but my music is allowing me to bring life to the many stories that I need to tell.

I know working with Midi Mafia has been crazy let us know what the chemistry and creative approach is like.

Midi Mafia is genius. However, most people don’t know but Midi Mafia is like family to me. I have known them many years. I met them when I was 14 or 15 in New York at Sony Records. I gave them a CD and since then, we have been family. The creative approach with them is always truly organic. They let Sonyae be Sonyae and that’s what I love about them.

How would you describe the current state of R&B?

I have so much respect for many of the RnB artists out today. However, I do feel that the passion in RnB is gone. I remember growing up and hearing music that brought some sort of feeling onto me. I want that back. That’s the type of music I plan to give my listeners. No matter the tempo of the song, I want all my listeners to leave a song feeling a certain way.

Ms. Elise what’s the next move?

I am excited to say that “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” dropped on June 14th, 2010. I am also back in the studio working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” and simultaneously recording new songs for my first official LP.

Sound in general is raw and heartfelt. I usually sing from a place of experience; rather it be my own experience or that of someone close to me. My new mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” certainly allowed me to play with a variety of tracks but overall, my sound is raw and heartfelt. I feel what I am bringing back to the RnB scene is the passion. I love music and I want all of my music to make my listeners feel a certain way.

This seems to be the time in hip hop and R&B where female artist are taking over, how will you stand out among the rest of the ladies wanting to burst into the scene?

I like to joke and say, “I’m a rapper, trapped in a singer’s body” but truth be told, I both sing and rap – comfortably. I don’t sing because I can simply carry a tune and I don’t rap because I have the ability to rhyme, I do both because neither is a struggle for me and they both are true passions of mine. My ability to do both is going to ultimately allow me to connect with a variety of fans and supporters; thus hopefully pushing my career to the next level.

"Sonyea on Yo Raps"

SONYAE INTERVIEW
- By Isha Cole | www.yoraps.com

Who exactly is Sonyae Elise and why do you call your self "The Lady Rebel"?

Sonyae Elise is passionate, focused, a hard worker and a dedicated individual who loves this venue of expression called music. The reason I call myself “The Lady Rebel” is quite simply because I am a rebellious individual. I tend to go against the grain and find my own way of making things work.

Since you are from New Jersey, how influential to believe New Jersey is in the music industry?

In general I believe New Jersey is influential to the entertainment industry as a whole. Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill and Whitney Houston all hail from the great state of New Jersey and are all considered to be huge influences in the music industry.

What are some reasons why New Jersey artists do not seem to have longevity in the music industry?

I don’t know if I totally agree that New Jersey artists don’t seem to have longevity in the music industry. Again, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah and Whitney Houston have had tremendous careers and I would be honored to one day be considered amongst them. Every thing has a season and the vibe of music changes in general. We frequently go through different phases, sometimes east coast music is more popular than west coast music and sometimes music from the south may be more popular than all. I don’t believe New Jersey as an entity has much to do with the longevity of an artist career.

How did your the environment growing up effect who you are as a person today?

Growing up, I went to multiple performing arts institutions and my family was heavily involved in the music industry. I spent many days of my young life in the studio with my mother and other family members who were all singers. Overall, that gave me a great appreciation of music and quickly made me realize that I wanted this to be my career.

Who are some artists that inspired you to go down this career path?

Linda Jones/ Phillis Hyman/ 2Pac/ Billie Holiday/ Ella Fitz/ Sarah Vaughan/ Nina Simone/ Donnie Hathaway/ Prince/ Chaka Khan/ Whitney Houston/ D' Angelo/ Mary J/ Erykah Badu/ Lauryn Hill/ Jill Scott/ Nas/ Jay-Z/ Diana Ross/ The Emotions/ En-Vouge/ Kim Burell/ Karen Clarke/ Su Su Bobien/ Melonie Daniels/ Barbra Streisand

What do you believe sets you a part from the tons of other up and coming singers in the music industry?

My music comes straight from my soul and I feel that it is what sets me apart from many artists both upcoming and established. In RnB music today there seems to be a huge lack of emotion and passion; and I most certainly plan to be apart of bringing that emotion and passion back to RnB music.

If you could work with any artist in the game right now who would it be and why?

Kanye West, Will.I.Am, Andre 3000 and Cee-Lo from Gnarls Barkley. I have such a high respect for their passion of their work. They all seem to live and breath music and have all managed to go against the grain in some way. I would certainly consider them “rebels” as well.

You hooked up with multi-platinum producers The MIDI Mafia , how did that come about and what role do they play in your career?

I love Midia Mafia. Most people don’t know but Midi Mafia is like family to me. I have known them many years. I met them when I was 14 or 15 in New York at Sony Records. I gave them a CD and we chatted a bit. Since that day, we have been family. Midi Mafia pretty much oversees everything pertaining to the brand of Sonyae Elise. I certainly wouldn’t be here without there consistent guidance and support.

Talk about your latest mixtape "Lady Rebel". What artists and or producers did you work with on this project?

The producers on the mixtape are Midi Mafia, Ski Beatz, A.U , Brite Ware and J.V.

What inspired your lead single "We Heard (Retweet)" ?

It’s a fast tempo, high energy, slick-talking type of record. “Re-tweet” refers to the reiteration of different points and ad-libs throughout the song. In the song I talk about the bitters and gossipers of the world. I also take a few shots at those who sit behind the safety net of their computer screen and hate on the next person. I’ve had a few experiences with that. Overall it’s a fun, sarcastic song that I am sure people are going to enjoy.

You performed in on and off Broadway plays such as "The Lion King" and "Grease". What were those experiences like and what did they teach you about the entertainment world in general?

Those experiences were absolutely life changing. Most importantly they taught me great stage presence; I can honestly say I am never nervous to go on stage and I can credit that to my acting in plays while I was growing up.

How important do you think social media is to artists?

Social Media is extremely important to artists because of - J Hatch

Acting allowed me to bring life to the stories of others, but my music is allowing me to bring life to the many stories that I need to tell.

In my show, I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve so that my audience can really feel what I’m saying and really feel the emotion that I have put into the song. Certainly when I hit the road with a more elaborate show, you can expect skits and scenes as interludes from song to song.
What’s next on the list?

Growing up, I went to multiple performing arts institutions and my family was heavily involved in the music industry. I spent many days of my young life in the studio with my mother and other family members who were all singers. Overall, that gave me a great appreciation of music and quickly made me realize that I wanted this to be my career.
Who are some of your musical influences?
Linda Jones/ Phillis Hyman/ 2Pac/ Billie Holiday/ Ella Fitz/ Sarah Vaughan/ Nina Simone/ Donnie Hathaway/ Prince/ Chaka Khan/ Whitney Houston/ D' Angelo/ Mary J/ Erykah Badu/ Lauryn Hill/ Jill Scott/ Nas/ Jay-Z/ Diana Ross/ The Emotions/ En-Vouge/ Kim Burell/ Karen Clarke/ Su Su Bobien/ Melonie Daniels/ Barbra Streisand

What current projects are you working on?
I am excited to say that “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” dropped on June 14th, 2010. I am also back in the studio working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” and simultaneously recording new songs for my first official LP.
How are you planning to 'Get Your Buzz Up'?
I plan to get my buzz up by consistently staying true to myself, and consistently delivering great music. If people connect with great music, they tend to spread the word which in turn also helps keep my buzz up. I also will continue to stay involved with social networking and will continue to be accessible.

Thanks for your time Sonyae, what’s new?
Everything is great! I’ve been in the lab non-stop, performing here and there but nothing too heavy. I’ve been traveling quite a bit lately, handling business on both coasts; so life is treating me great! I am truly blessed.
Congrats on the success “Lady Rebel” is reaching. The Mixtape dropped only a few weeks ago and is doing very well on downloads. What’s your favorite track?
That’s a difficult question. Lady Rebel Vol. 1 is such a great mixtape that I can’t choose just one song. As you know, I write from a place of passion and emotion so depending on the mood I am in, my choice as “favorite track” would change. I love them all for different reasons.
Were you expecting such a great response from your fans?
I wouldn’t say I was “expecting” a great response but I was certainly hoping for one. However, I did expect for my fans to connect with the mixtape. There is a song for EVERYONE on it.
The video to “We Heard” (Re Tweet) is fun and catchy! Tell me about the video concept.
The concept of the video was to be exactly what you said, fun and catchy. We shot it on green screen and had a fantastic illustrator come in and chop it up and design over it in a really cool way. I am very happy with the video. It is bright and fun and very much a perfect match for the song.
So what’s your next single? I’m already eager to see another video!
This is my first time letting the cat out of the bag so this is definitely an exclusive interview. The next single and video is “Human Error”. I have already shot the video and it should be coming to you very soon.
Any upcoming shows, when and where?
I know I will be on the east coast for the next couple of weeks. Philadelphia, New York and of course New Jersey are all certainly going to be visited. I should be hitting up Miami and Atlantic very soon as well but for the specifics, check out www.sonyaeelise.com
Today’s entertainer has to be a bit of everything to get noticed. Being that you act, sing and rhyme are you finding it easy to get some shine?
It’s certainly not “easy”. I am blessed that I am able to act, sing and rhyme but it doesn’t change the fact that in this industry it takes hard work, dedication and persistency to make it.
Who are some of your influences?
Linda Jones/ Phillis Hyman/ 2Pac/ Billie Holiday/ Ella Fitz/ Sarah Vaughan/ Nina Simone/ Donnie Hathaway/ Prince/ Chaka Khan/ Whitney Houston/ D' Angelo/ Mary J/ Erykah Badu/ Lauryn Hill/ Jill Scott/ Nas/ Jay-Z/ Diana Ross/ The Emotions/ En-Vouge/ Kim Burell/ Karen Clarke/ Su Su Bobien/ Melonie Daniels/ Barbra Streisand

I’m chilling with the beautiful Sonyae Elise! What’s going baby girl, what you been up to

Well, I have been recording non-stop! Also, doing a few shows here and there but nothing too heavy. I have been traveling quite a bit lately, handling business on both coasts.

From heavy hitting music geniuses to award winning authors and thespians, your home of New Jersey, is indeed a breeding ground for remarkable talent. How do you plan on representing that fire?

Your Mix tape “Lady Rebel," is home to a hot lead single and video, “We Heard” (Re-Tweet) tell us a bit about that track.

Overall it’s a fun, sarcastic song that I am sure people are going to enjoy.

What producers shared their talents in the overall concept of the mix tape?

There are a few producers on “Lady Rebel Vol. 1”
Midi Mafia, Ski Beatz, A.U, Brite, Ware and J.V.

What grabs your attention when searching for the perfect production for a song?

I prefer dynamics. I love tracks that move and have some elevation. I love a good build up. I love drums, horns and overall just music that feels live. When it comes to performing, I would always prefer to sing with a live band; it’s truly my forte.

So you wake up and you have three voicemails from three different producers that want to work with you, who are they?

Well Other than Midi Mafia… Kwame Did It, Ski Betz & Sizzle

I’d like to talk about your acting experiences. Your resume is on fire! From Broadway to mix tapes, how does acting entwine with your music career?

I began singing and acting around the same time, so I have a strong passion for both of them. It’s also rather fair to attribute a large part of how comfortable I am on stage to my Broadway experiences and I am sure once I start to tour, I will more than likely have a theatrical and visually stimulating show. What’s up next for Ms. Sonyae? I have began working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” which means I am also back in the studio doing around 6 to 8 hours every night. No complaints though, I love it. I’ve also been tucking away some great songs for my first official LP, so overall I have been in non-stop work mode. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Drop your online addresses.

Pleasure to have you with us Sonyae, please tell us a why they call you “Lady Rebel”?

I’m Lady Rebel because I choose to not conform to what the music industry says can and can not work. I rap and sing; so many people would tell me to pick one. Why pick one, if I do both? I am an artist and the reason I am an artist is to express and expose myself in the hopes of helping the next person. I will automatically exceed the norm and stand apart from many artists because my music is raw, heartfelt and passionate.

Born and raised in New Jersey, home of many talented artist that span from actors to models, singers to MC’s. How do you plan on keeping that torch of talent burning?

That’s actually the title of your latest project, “Lady Rebel”. What was the concept behind the development and what assisted you in creating that vision?

“Lady Rebel Vol. 1” is unlike any compilation of work that I have ever done. It’s young and fresh yet also raw and heartfelt; which was the overall concept for the mixtape. The process of putting this mixtape together was truly organic. My team Midi Mafia & I work like a 24 hour assembly line. All of our schedules are very different but one day of creating would usually go a little something like this… Bruce is the early bird so he'll make music all morning in studio B. Swift is up and fully alert by noon either creating as well or mixes all day in studio A. I'm a night owl so by the time I "submerge", I have a folder full of Midi Mafia beats, ideas, etc… I then work until the next day, leaving 3 to 4 songs, for the most part, completed and ready to be mixed.

Talk about your lead single and video for ‘We heard’ (Re-tweet) whats the concept?

It’s a fast tempo, high energy, slick-talking type of record. “Re-tweet” refers to the reiteration of different points and ad-libs throughout the song. In the song I talk about the bitters and gossipers of the world. I also take a few shots at those who sit behind the safety net of their computer screen and hate on the next person. Overall it’s a fun, sarcastic song that I am sure people are going to enjoy.
Who can we expect to hear on “Lady Rebel," as far as featured artist and guest producers?

There are a few producers on “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” and 1 feature by Rahman Apollo (Apollo the Rebel). Then Midi Mafia Ski Beatz A.U (by way of L.E) Brite Ware J.V.

Is there a particular sound you listen for when choosing production for a project, and what draws your attention?

I prefer dynamics. I love tracks that move and have some elevation. I love a good build up. I love drums, horns and overall just music that feels live. When it comes to performing, I would always prefer to sing with a live band; it’s truly my forte.

There also seems to be some talk about you having an extensive acting resume. Cheers to you! How does your acting experience play out in your music adventures?

I was raised around entertainers, so taking control of a stage has always been quite natural and easy for me. However, I certainly attribute a large portion of how comfortable I am on stage to the many years I spent acting. I’ve never been afraid of a crowd; as a matter of fact, when I am in performance mode I feel most liberated and free.

What made you decide to dabble in the music field?

Again, I was raised around entertainers my entire life so I was always free to experiment. Ms. Sonyae, you definitely Dream Big and Hustle Hard. What’s next on the list? I’m working closely with Coast to Coast and iStandardProducers.com on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2”. My first mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” will drop in June, so I am doing a bunch of press and promotion for that. I am also still in the studio, tucking away some of my best records for my first LP.

"Sonyae Elise on HHLO.net"

We appreciate the time Sonyae, let’s get right to it. Who is “Lady Rebel”?

Lady Rebel is synonymous with Sonyae Elise: Rebellious, Raw, Heartfelt and Passionate. That’s why I love music. It allows me to be all that I am; without judgment, and gives me the venue to channel, release and share my experiences with those who support me.

I’m curious about the leadoff single “We Heard” (Re Tweet), what a catchy name. What’s that all about?

It’s a fast tempo, high energy, slick-talking type of record. “Re-tweet” refers to the reiteration of different points and ad-libs throughout the song. In the song I talk about the bitters and gossipers of the world. I also take a few shots at those who sit behind the safety net of their computer screen and hate on the next person. Overall it’s a fun, sarcastic song that I am sure people are going to enjoy.

Talk about the production for a bit on “Lady Rebel”; are there any heavy hitting drums, crazy snares? Who are the producers?

There are a few producers on “Lady Rebel Vol. 1”
Midi Mafia Ski Beatz A.U (by way of L.E) Brite Ware J.V.
There are most definitely tracks with heavy hitting drums and crazy snares. Even a track or two that has a jazzy feel with live horns. It’s a fantastic compilation of music, I must say.

What was your creative approach toward the Mix tape? Any featured artist?

There is one feature by Rahman Apollo (Apollo the Rebel). Listeners can expect a ton of energy and a few interesting twists and flips on songs they may already be familiar with. The creative approach was simple; I wanted to stay true to myself. This is my first public body of work and I wanted to stay true to Sonyae Elise. I both sing and rap so I didn’t approach the album as a singer nor a rapper solely; I approached it as an artist and allowed myself to be free from being put in a box.
Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifah have both set a high bar in entertainment.

Hailing from New Jersey yourself, how do you plan on standing and putting on for your city?

Both “L boogies” have also shared the bright moniker as singer, actress and MC. So how does your Broadway experience tie into your passion for music?

I began singing and acting around the same time, so I have a strong passion for both of them. It’s also rather fair to attribute a large part of how comfortable I am on stage to my Broadway experiences and I am sure once I start to tour, I will more than likely have a theatrical and visually stimulating show.

And being that you’re a trained actress, what can we expect to see at a Sonyae performance?

As of now, a Sonyae Elise performance can be described as raw and authentic. I sing from a place of passion and that’s obvious during my performances. I have an infatuation with fashion so you can always expect to see me in a great ensemble. Hopefully you will always see me with a live band; but if not, I certainly don’t mind going in with only the track. Other than that, you can expect me to give you all that I have and leave my soul on the stage.

From Broadway to 808s, what’s next on your to do list?

My first mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” drops June 2010. I am currently in the midst of press junkets and doing promotion for that. I have began working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” with Coast to Coast and iStandardProducers.com; which means I am also back in the studio doing around 6 or 7 hours every night. No complaints though, I love it. I’ve also been tucking away some great songs for my first official LP, so overall I have been in non-stop work mode. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hey Sonyae, thanks for taking the time to talk with me. What’s new on the home front?

Well, I have been recording non-stop! Also, doing a few shows here and there but nothing too heavy. I have been traveling quite a bit lately, handling business on both coasts.

You have an impressive background as a trained actress, what made you decide to pursue lyricism?

My reason for pursuing lyricism was based on a desire to tell my own stories. I have so many thoughts and emotions bottled up inside of me that I need to share with the world, and lyricism is allowing me to do that. Acting allowed me to bring life to the stories of others, but my music is allowing me to bring life to the many stories that I need to tell.

This seems to be the decade for lady lyricist. How will you stand out among the many aspiring to break through to the next level?

I like to joke and say, “I’m a rapper, trapped in a singer’s body” but truth be told, I both sing and rap – comfortably. I don’t sing because I can simply carry a tune and I don’t rap because I have the ability to rhyme, I do both because neither is a struggle for me and they both are true passions of mine. My ability to do both is going to ultimately allow me to connect with a variety of fans and supporters; thus hopefully pushing my career to the next level.

You’re hailing from New Jersey, home to some incredibly fly artist, such as Lauryn Hill, Redman, Queen Latifah and Treach. How do you plan on maintaining the talent reigns?

“We Heard” (Re-Tweet) is said to be a banger and the leadoff single to your new mix tape, “Lady Rebel”. When do you expect the mix tape to drop and what can we expect to hear?

I am excited to say that “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” will drop June 14, 2010. It’s one of those mixtapes that you can listen to from start to finish and feel that you have been on a roller coaster ride of emotions. My goal in making music in general is to evoke emotion - so you certainly should expect that. I’m inspired by the experiences of others but the majority of “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” comes directly from my own experiences. Remember I rap and sing, so you can expect variety in terms of tempo and content. Also, I’m a girl so of course you can expect to hear me expose my infatuation with fashion!

I see you’ve worked with Multi Platinum production team Midi Mafia, that’s dope! How did you guys connect?

I’m happy to say Midi Mafia is my family. Not too many artists can say that, so I know I am definitely blessed. When I was 15 years old, I bumped into Midi Mafia at Sony in New York. We chatted a bit, I gave them a CD as I was leaving and from then on I have been their little sister. It’s beyond just work at this point they are truly my big brothers. We are without doubt “A Family Business”.

Do they do most of the production on the mix tape?

Yes of course, Midi Mafia did the majority of the original beats.

What should we be looking out for, any future projects?

In general, you should always be looking out for the truth, and once you find it, never stray away from it. As far as my future projects, I am currently working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” as “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” is now complete. In addition to recording for the next mixtape, I am also tucking away some of my best records for my first official LP.

You have an entire song dedicated to online demeanor, where can we find you online?

Hey Sonyae, what’s going on?

Well, I have been recording non-stop! Also, doing a few shows here and there but nothing too heavy. I have been traveling quite a bit lately, handling business on both coasts.

I’d like to talk a bit about your latest project ”Lady Rebel," what angle were you reaching for and what can listeners expect to hear?

“Lady Rebel Vol. 1” is one of those mixtapes that you can listen to from start to finish and feel that you have been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. My goal in making music in general is to evoke emotion - so you certainly should expect that. I’m inspired by the experiences of others but the majority of “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” comes directly from my own experiences. I both sing and rap so you can expect variety in terms of tempo and content. Also, I’m a girl so of course you can expect to hear me expose my infatuation with fashion! Tell me the difference in this joint compared to your other projects? “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” is unlike any compilation of work that I have ever done. The process of putting this mixtape together was truly organic. I literally worked in the studio 6-8 hours per day doing non-stop writing and recording. I realize that with this mixtape I was able to experiment and challenge myself to try new sounds, and different tracks that I wouldn’t have ordinarily been drawn to. I have most certainly grown as an artist over the past few months and I have the process of creating “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” to thank for that.

What producers and artist are sharing their talents on “Lady Rebel”?
Midi Mafia Ski Beatz A.U Brite Ware J.V. Rahman Apollo (Apollo the Rebel) L.E KDin.

Your lead single ‘We heard’ addresses internet thugs and their behind the keyboard toughness, is this coming from a first hand experience? Anything you can share with us?

Without doubt, I have experienced my fair share of “online hate” from others. I have been “tweeted” and “facebooked” about by people who would never say my name; instead they would use context clues to hint around to the fact that they were talking about me. It’s actually quite comical rather than harmful when you think about it. I always respect someone more if they come to me directly and address their issues with me.

I saw a few of your performances online and I’m very impressed. Your on stage presence is incredible. Do you credit that to your years of acting?

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your love.

Should we expect to see you on the silver screen or back on Broadway any time soon?

I love Broadway. At the moment, I am focused on my music, but once my music career is where it needs to be I would certainly be interested in getting back into theatre. I most definitely am interested in gracing the silver screen; that’s actually one of my lifetime goals.

Being that you act, sing and rhyme are you finding your niche in today’s rotation of music?

Absolutely. Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill have done just that and are two of the most well respected women in music. I believe that problems arise when an artist is introduced as one entity and then years later they switch their focus. I am all about an artist growing and maturing over the years but I believe it’s a strategic process in switching your sound completely. I figured I would come through the door being me. I sing, rap and act and that is me right now and will be me from here on out.

What makes you stand out among the “Nicki’s” and “Beyonce’s”?

Well, there isn’t anyone who can be Beyonce nor Nicki Minaj better than Beyonce and Nicki Minaj, so my focus is on being individually unique. I’m a rebel, so I plan to have a great time defining who I am as an artist and as an individual. One thing I would like to call attention to that I am very proud of is the facts that I am a dark-skinned female. If there is one thing the music industry isn’t over saturated with are women of darker complexions.

So what’s next for Ms. Sonyae?

I am excited to say that “Lady Rebel Vol. 1” will drop June 2010. I am also back in the studio working on my next mixtape “Lady Rebel Vol. 2” and simultaneously recording new songs for my first official LP.

Bio

In the dictionary it states that a ‘Rebel’ is someone unconventional who opposes the codes and conventions of society, in simpler terms a ‘Rebel’ is someone who doesn’t follow the pack and stands out amongst the norm. New Jersey born R&B sensation Sonyae Elise, the ‘Lady Rebel’ is out to show the world that her raw, heartfelt and passionate musical offerings stand out and exceed the norm.

Born in Newark, yet moving quite often throughout her home state of New Jersey, Sonyae always had aspirations of becoming something special. However, like a storyline out of 'American Gangster', Sonyae had some hardships to deal with revolving around her father’s in and outs with the law. ‘Poppa was a rolling stone’ says Sonyae, ‘I was definitely exposed to a lot of interesting information as a child’ she continues. Sonyae’s mother was a singer/songwriter and model her whole life, but after Sonyae was born, she fell back to handle the duties of being a full time mother. ‘We are very musical’ Sonyae reminisces ‘I've been sleeping on studio couches since I was born’ says Sonyae with a chuckle. She goes on to say ‘I have always been "ahead of the pack" so to speak, between my mothers musical lifestyle & my fathers street lifestyle, I was raised around adults so maintaining normal relationships with my peers has been quite the task.

Having worked in theatre since the third grade and studying it more thoroughly since middle school, Sonyae quickly gravitated towards on and off Broadway stage performance opportunities for acclaimed shows such as Lion King, Grease, Little Shop of Horrors and Rag Time. Sonyae’s musical influences range from 2 Pac to Prince, Linda Jones to Nas and Phyllis Hyman to Barbara Streisand. With no musical training, just a family history of talented musicians and producers, Sonyae linked up with Multi Platinum production duo ‘Midi Mafia’ (50 Cent, Jennifer Lopez, Fantasia, Justin Bieber and more) at the tender age of 15 at Sony Records in NYC. Sonyae remembers back ‘I just gave them some music, they fell in love with it and we have been family ever since’ Well since that day Sonyae has been extremely busy preparing for her time to shine, she has collaborated with some of the most sought out producers in the game such as Los Da Mystro (Trey Songz, Dream, Usher), Kwame (Pussy Cat Dolls, Christina Aguilerra, Mary J Blige), Soul Diggaz (Destiny’s Child, Missy Elliot, Diddy) and Platinum artists such as Bow Wow and Omarion to name a few. She hopes to work with Andre 3000, Cee-Lo and Kanye West in the near future.

Fast-forward to the summer of 2010 and Sonyae Elise is poised to introduce herself to the world in her latest mix tape ‘Lady Rebel’ which boasts original production from Midi Mafia, Ski Beats, A.U, Brite Ware and JV. ‘I want to provoke an emotion in every listener’s lives when they hear my music’ says an ambitious Sonyae Elise ‘ I want them to laugh, cry, heal, dance or scream, whatever they feel’. With a lead single and video for ‘’We Heard’ (Retweet) Sonyae calls out insecure Internet thugs who talk tough while hiding behind the keyboard. With an aggressive viral marketing campaign including several remixes planned, ‘We Heard’ (Retweet) should have the World Wide Web in a frenzy in no time at all.

So when it comes to the music industry and the norm that critics and music lovers alike love to dissect, please understand the value and originality of Sonyae Elise as well as her ability to stand alone as a ‘Rebel’. ‘I just want to win and have a long lasting record breaking career’ says Sonyae ‘3 years from now my goal is to emerge on the movie screen, have several endorsements and be recognized as a brand within the world of music. Other than that, I am a cancer, my favorite color is green, I love seafood (although I'm allergic) and I enjoy long walks on the beach… That is all!!
